Subject: Excellent article on Habitat for Humanity homes

Many of our friends have expressed interest in the Monroe County Habitat for Humanity home ownership program. I attached a recent Herald Times article about one of the recent homes.
This is a very successful program that has enabled many low income families to own their homes, and reduce their housing costs, which is frequently a very heavy burden for these families.
This is not a free house, rather, the family signs up and is qualified with their regular job income, and commits many hours of volunteer support helping to build several homes, and eventually, the next year, it will be their turn.
This latest program mprovement, adds solar panels on top of the homes to greatly reduce the monthly electrical utility cost. Thank you City of Bloomington.
Habitat hosts application seminars every year. The web site is below.
Successful candidates have good job histories, regular income.
One of the most remarkable parts of this program is the community support. For years, groups have worked as teams, in warm weather and in cold weather to build these homes. North and South High schools, Unitarian Universalist church, Sherwood Oaks, Womans+ Build, IU Credit Union, and many other individuals and groups. Especially noteworthy are the on-site leaders who mentor and share their construction expertise, to make sure this work is done safely and effectively. The members of these teams report they are forever changed by this experience. This is truly one of the finest parts of our Bloomington community.
Here is the web site to learn more about this wonderful program.
