Let's start at the most basic problems and solutions.
First thing to check- In the upper left hand corner of the board the is a grey and white flame symbol, that symbol is illuminated by a multi color led. Based on the color of that light we can diagnose problems.
No light - Problem :Board has no power.
Solutions: Model 587 (touch board finger or pen, District provided) - Check to make sure the board is plugged into the power outlet. Check that the power pack cable is plugged into the pack and the board securely (the cable goes behind the board, DO NOT remove the board from the wall). On the left hand side of some boards there is a power button red, means it is off, press it once for green. Restart or turn on PC at this point.
Model 378 (pen only, all PTSA boards and some District provided) - The Board must be connected to the USB cable and it to the computer which must be on before the light will turn on.
Red Light - Problem: Board isn't connected to the PC of Software not installed properly. One way to check this is to look for an icon by the clock in the bottom right of your screen that looks like
Solution: Check to make sure a USB cable going from the board to a USB port on the computer is plugged in. If it is try plugging it into a different USB port. If the computer is on the windows desktop you should hear a beep when you plug/unplug the USB cable.
Solution: The software or driver has become corrupted and needs to be reinstalled. Open my computer from the windows start screen then navigate to S:\Software and Resources\Software Installers\IWB\Promethean you will see two file label activinspire and activ driver. Try installing just the driver and restarting the PC. If that doesn't work also reinstall activinspire and then restart.
Additional Problems:
Problem: No sound comes from my speakers attached to the board
Solutions: #1 -Board isn't plugged into power or connected via USB cable to computer, #2 - Left hand side speaker power button is red, press to turn them on light becomes green. #3- Volume is turned down, Turn knob on left side or board clockwise to raise volume. Volume could also be turned down or muted in windows by the clock in lower right.
Problem: Writing is way off from where we are try to write with the pen.
Solutions: Board needs to be calibrated. Hover the pen (without touching the tip) over the flame icon in the upper left for several seconds. Light stays blue and screen should go into calibration mode, follow the onscreen instructions. If hovering the pen doesn't cause it to enter calibration mode, right click on the Promethean icon (by the clock lower right corner of pc screen), choose calibrate (9 or 25 points either should be good)
Problem: The pen doesn't write at all and it doesn't work to calibrate.
Solutions: The pen is probably broke, borrow or try another pen that you know works (tested in other teachers room) and see if that resolves the issue. If so your pen is broke and needs to be replaced. Conversely you can also take your pen into a room with a working IWB and try it to see if it works.
Problem: The pen writes, but not well or it skips.
Solutions: Could be multiple things, #1 - Press harder. Most people are too gentle with applying pressure to the tip and that causes some of the skipping. #2 - The tips do wear down over time. Grip the brown nib(tip) and pull out. Replace with new nibs. Nibs are available through central warehouse but vary in size based on pen manufacturer date. Look on the underside of the pen to see when yours was made before 11/10 is oone nib and after that date is a different one.
