The MicrogenDB website is closing down on Wednesday 2nd June 2021.

The MicrogenDB Forum (groups.google.com/a/sheffield.ac.uk/g/microgen-database-group) will remain open for the foreseeable future.

Sadly, the Sheffield Solar research group no longer has the capacity or funding to update the MicrogenDB website.

Without updates the MicrogenDB website will be increasingly vulnerable to cyber-attack which may impact the site itself, the Sheffield Solar research group and/or users of the website.

The MicrogenDB website has run since 2011 and has provided a useful contribution to the development of solar PV in the UK.

The Sheffield Solar website (www.solar.sheffield.ac.uk), PV_Live and PV_Forecast will remain up for the foreseeable future.

We would like to thank all those who have contributed data, feedback and discussion points over the years.

Thanks

The Sheffield Solar Team

My URN number is 90 so you can see that I am one of your original contributors and still continue to do so. I hope you have made good use of what we have all the data we have been supplying and wish you all well for the future.

Thanks for all your efforts to keep it runninng.
Sad that the 'green levelling up' doesn't include a few k to maintain it.
Hope no one gets sacked.

Thank you Sheffield to keep this website running for all this time.
Can somebody recommend an alternative site that we can submit meter readings to and that compares them with other pv systems (ideally reasonable close by).

What a shame.Cannot you apply for some support from our Govt who profess to be green?
Thanks for all your efforts

What an absolute shame. As someone who has worked in the climate-energy sector with a heavy focus on data, plus an ex-high school teacher who sees the value in things like this as 'citizen science' and educational material, I feel it's a huge loss. Thanks for all your hard work and perhaps you'll be back soon.

@Oldsilverfox, you can continue to use this forum for discussion - this is hosted on Google Groups and so we can leave it running with minimal risk and resource.

Best wishes

One advantage of a (private) Facebook is  that it might gain a larger readership. I suspect that FB is more widely accepted

Does anyone know where I can take my old u/s SMA inverter? My local council see it as commercial waste and do not handle such items.

It's WEEE waste. The local council will have the facilities to handle it
(and in fact have to by law). Go to the local tip, ask where the bin is
for WEEE waste and chuck it in. Don't ask, don't apologise... :-)

Thank you everyone for your replies which I greatly appreciate. There is
a general sense of opinion that I take the old inverter to my Household
Waste Recycling Centre. I will take my well-built 6' 4" grandson with me
to assist in deposing of the inverter :-)

Brian I would have preferred to have repaired the inverter but only had
the option of replacing it. It worries me that I'll be adding to the
growing mountain of WEEE waste.

Put it on eBay with a description of the fault. It may be that someone somewhere needs it.

Sorry, should have factored that in to my reply :-)

In theory the whole point about WEEE waste is that it is kept separate
so that it can be properly recycled. In practice, we know that it gets
tipped into landfill with the rest. I too like repairing rather than
replacing but unfortunately modern equipment is inherently unrepairable
(surface mount components, specialised firmware and the like)... However
you get extra karma points for feeling guilty about throwing it away.

Hi Jem, there was no error code given, the inverter just stopped working and no error could be found. I think the eBay suggestion is a good one and will easy my conscience some what.

Hi Nigel,

Thanks for the karma points awarded for my guilt burden.  It is a serious point though, especially as my main motivation on installing a PV array, plus having my solid wall home externally insulated, was to help reduce the negative impact my home has on the environment. Both this actions have resulted in a substantial reduction in energy use but I did expect the inverter to last a lot longer.

Offering the inverter on eBay or Freecycle will be my first step in reducing my guilt burden.

A very good point, although good luck with Freecycle. My local group is
full of timewasters who reply that they want something immediately it is
posted and then never collect.

Let us know how you get on. As a matter of interest how long did your
inverter last and what was the make/model.

All the best

Hi Sue,
You could try finding a local education establishment who provide training in renewables and see if they could use it for training purposes. That’s what I nearly did with mine a few years ago but then I found someone who could actually use it. Best of luck.

What's the typical life (and failuremechanism?) of PV inverters?

FWIW, we can give thumbs up/down for recipients, I have started giving Downers to people who have repeatedly said they will come and collect, and then don't. It makes it easier as time goes by to filter out the timewasters.

Very sad to see the demise of this valuable citizen science project providing data from across the country on PV performance. With the urn 8 you can see that I was an early adopter with something like 7000 contributors in the end. I do hope that the historic data can be captured and made available for other researchers and those who could make use of the data. Andy
