So what do we have to do to get the U.S. to attack us so it will build open WiFi in New Mexico?

U.S. Underwrites Internet Detour Around Censors
By JAMES GLANZ and JOHN MARKOFF
The Obama administration is leading a global effort to deploy "shadow" Internet and mobile phone systems that dissidents can use to undermine repressive governments.

Wait. Arizona should start firing on neighboring states, any day now.

It seems like a double standard the way the military is setting up clandestine internet networks in foreign countries yet the same government is simultaneously shutting down sites in the United States. For instance, last November ICE seized 82 web sites for copyright infringement, and more recently the FBI seized dozens of poker sites. What happens if the Libyan civilians start using there clandestine internet to share music rather than spread revolution? Will ICE shut them down?

Currently the only song available in Libya is Muammar Gaddafi singing "I do it my way."

DNS is a small part of the internet. It could be replaced with something more robust (like I2P's naming, AndnA, or the new p2pdns project).

I find this approach appealing: Sonification in surgery

A seminal collection of "Auditory Display of Information" was published by SFI well over a decade ago:

Auditory Display: Sonification, Audification, And Auditory Interfaces (Santa Fe Institute Studies in the Sciences of Complexity Proceedings)

I have my own take on how to approach the problem of encoding abstract information into perceptual spaces, of which sound is one key component (second only/sometimes to visuals).

My colleague and partner in MusificationDr. Panaiotis, has a patent (pending) in Musical Textures as an approach to Data Musification wherein statistical variations in data can be encoded in relevant variations in components of algorithmically generated music.

My own area of research is focused on the development and application of metaphors for Perceptualization (including Visual and Aural).  Music offers a well developed systematization of sound up to and including pre-existing metaphorical mappings from musical components (volume, pitch, tempo, tambor, etc.) to target domains such as atmospheric phenomena(weather), inhabited landscapes(jungle, forest, desert), and even urbanscapes or factoryscapes.

While many have approached sonification (encoding information into volume and frequency) directly, in a way similar to much visualization (using simple hue ramps, geometric primitives, etc.) it is key to effective perceptualization (especially of abstract data sets) that the encodings be consistent and apropos of some system which the user already has an intuitive understanding.   In visualization, even simple hue ramps tend to appeal to an intuitive experience... some applications of the spectrum appeal to our common-sense understanding of blue being cool (like water) and red being hot (like fire) even though the physical interpretation of blackbody radiaition would suggest the opposite.

We published a bit of work in this area when applied to Network Monitoring for Security... we are working on systems for Musification of Molecular Dynamics, streams of patient data in an ICU and in the context of education (Nephron).

What kind of data/systems are you thinking about sonifying?  Do you have an approach in mind already?  It is a very broad and underexplored field in my experience.

Gary -

And of course, I didn't bother to investigate your background before I sent this.

Seeing your Oberlin homepage, I appreciate the implications of your question much better.  I'm CC:ing Panaiotis on this as you and he may wish to collaborate directly!

Thanks Steve,

I think I saw some of the SFI papers those many years ago when they were not of much interest.  Are these papers available on line?
After I posted my message I checked wikipedia and found a list of references that i have begun to sift through.

I got lots of useful information from SFI on complexity and other mathematical things to use in my compositions.  I gave a talk at SFX in December.

One of the reasons I have settled in Santa Fe is to get closer to people who are doing interesting work at the crossroads of science and art.  Collaboration is one of my goals.

I met Panaiotis briefly at some event at SFX.

I don't have specific goals yet and my well use what I learn to enrich my music.  I supervised a number of honors projects in psychology dealing with perception while I was at Oberlin.  Found them very interesting and informative to me as a composer.
