Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,
There were a few things that I forgot to mention in my last email:
- Thank you to the Spring Break trip leaders!
- Nicky and Me special introduction to SET podcast
- Yearbook orders now open
- Last chance to purchase Soiree tickets (read the plea from the SET PA!)
Thank you to the Spring Break trip leaders!
We had three amazing Spring Break trips happen over the break and I want to publicly thank the staff who volunteered their vacation time to spend even more time with our students. We had Ms. Lennon and Mr. Apalategui lead a trip to England where the students toured London, watched the Phantom of the Opera, and, according to Althea, cried over a delicious lamb wrap. We had Ms. Farias and Ms. Jokanovic lead a service trip to Guatemala where students connected with Guatemalan elementary school students, helped with school repairs, experienced Guatemalan culture, and squeezed in some touristy things. Mr. Snow and Ms. Hines led a trip to some of our best National Parks where students braved winter conditions at the Grand Canyon, Zion, and Bryce.
The photos show many happy students and staff members. Many of the reports were of life changing experiences. The best part is that the chaperones had fun, too, because our students are so easy to travel with. This means they might volunteer to do this again next year. Stay tuned!
Nicky and Me special introduction to SET podcast
We created a special video version of our most recent Nicky and Me podcast that we're using to introduce new families to SET. It's entitled What make us Special? Hopefully it's nothing new for our existing families, but you might be interested to hear us analyze the qualities of SET that make it such a special place for students and staff alike. The video version is on our website under the About Us link. It can be found here: https://sethigh.org/what_makes_us_special/
The audio-only version can be found in the usual places on Spotify or on our website.

Last chance to purchase Soiree tickets (read the plea from the SET PA!)
Last Chance To Purchase Soiree Tickets!
Chef Guillermo (Memo) Vazquez created a scrumptious menu and invited the Soiree Committee to a tasting at Belly Up. The food is delicious and there is something for everyone - drinkers and non-drinkers, vegan, vegetarian, gluten free and meat lovers.
Our emcee, Chuck Foster, is the dad of SET Class of 2024 graduates and a Gen X comic. Originally from the Detroit area, Chuck, came to his senses and moved to San Diego in 2002, which makes him a California native. However, he is still looking for good pizza west of the Mississippi river. Chuck usually performs throughout the San Diego area but has also done shows all over the country and even in England, which means he is funny (or not) on two continents. Chuck generously donated his time to emcee the Soiree!
Here are our handy FAQs
What’s up with calling it a “Soiree?” Is this really a gala in disguise?
We thought “soiree” conveyed the more user-friendly vibe of this event. This is not a gala. It’s not fancy and not formal. There will be no tuxedos. It’s just a big, fun, nicer-than-usual party to see if we can’t raise a few bucks for our school.
Who gets the money?
The teachers and the kids. The SET Parent Association provides financial support for SET in a number of ways. Over the past few years, we have funded as needs arose: Arts, Science, Tech, Sports, and more! We also pay for food at our community events, feed the teachers on Exhibition nights, and buy big things when we can - like a minivan last year.
I’m a very busy person. Spring is crazy for me.
We’re busy too, and spring IS nuts. Spring break, half days, work, all of it. But this is a one-of-a-kind, can’t-miss event. Miss other things, but don’t miss THIS.
Can my kids come?
No. This is an adults-only event. Kids get to come to the fall picnic and other SET events, but this one’s for the grown-ups!
Well, this all sounds very fun, but we’re on a budget.
We get it. We realize that a lot of our families aren't in a position to shell out a lot of money. We’ve found ways this year to make our tickets the cheapest they’ve ever been. If you’re on the fence, it’ll be worth it!
Wait, the teachers are coming too?
Yep, this is a chance to mingle with the teachers! Their tickets are donated, so they plan on being there!
Will there be alcohol?
Why, yes. Yes there will be.
Is this tax-deductible?
We’re a 501(c)(3) - Donations of $250 are tax deductible! We’ll send you a receipt and everything.
Can other adult family members buy tickets?
Yes! We’d love to have your child’s grandparents, aunts, uncles and other loved ones to come see what SET is all about and join in the fun!
Will I get physical tickets?
Nope! Just check in at the front and we’ll give you your 10 free raffle tickets (if you purchased your soiree tix by 3/14), your drink ticket, and your bid card!
OK, let's do this. How do I buy a ticket?
