Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,

  • CAASPP testing for 11th graders starts tomorrow.  (arrive by 8:30)
  • CAASPP incentives for students
  • Fitness Gram for 9th graders tomorrow (arrive by 8:30)
  • Valedictorian and Salutatorian (Noor B. and Ashley B.)

CAASPP incentives for students

We are fully aware that we are indebted to our 11th graders for trying their best on the CAASPP tests since most of the benefit of performing well is for the future of SET High and not for the individual test taker, but there is one tangible benefit to testing well that goes beyond personal and school pride.  Performing well can exempt you from college placement tests for Math and English.  I am still scarred from the math placement test that I had to take when I thought that I was just doing a pre-college visit the summer before I started at UCSD.  The admissions office welcomed me to school and then immediately put me in a room for a 2 hour placement test.  Had I had the option to have a random test that I took in high school exempt me from that torture, I would have jumped at the opportunity!

So, do your best so that you can avoid a placement test!  That, and do it for SET!

Thank you 11th graders!

Fitness Gram for 9th graders tomorrow (arrive by 8:30)

Our 9th graders will be taking the Fitness Gram tomorrow.  The mandatory announcement for this test follows:

Our students in grade 9 will be administered the required California Physical Fitness Test (PFT) this school year on May 9, 2023. For this testing period, the California Department of Education (CDE) has emergency regulations that will allow schools to administer only the following five components of the PFT:

    • Aerobic Capacity
    • Abdominal Strength and Endurance
    • Trunk Extensor Strength and Flexibility
    • Upper Body Strength and Endurance
    • Flexibility

About the PFT

California has chosen the FITNESSGRAM® as its annual PFT for students in grades five, seven, and nine. Results from the PFT provide students and their families with a measurement they can use along with other information to monitor their overall fitness. The results also can be used by schools to evaluate their physical education program.

Helping Your Child Prepare

You play an important role in your child’s education and can help your child get ready for the test. Here are ways you can help:

    • Talk about the PFT with your child. Make sure your child is not anxious and is ready to do their very best.
    • Tell your child that you and their teacher are both there to help, every step of the way, and want them to do their best to finish what they can.
    • Help make sure your child engages in 60 minutes of activity every day.
    • Make sure your child gets a good night’s sleep and a nutritious breakfast before testing.

For More Information

To learn more about the PFT, visit the CDE Parent Guides to Understanding web page at https://www.cde.ca.gov/ta/tg/ca/parentguidetounderstand.asp.

If you have any questions about your child’s participation in the PFT, the FITNESSGRAM®, or the test results, please contact Ms. Geis at nicky...@sethigh.org

Valedictorian and Salutatorian

Congratulations to this year's Valedictorian, Noor Bouzelfane, and to this year's Salutatorian, Ashley Ball!

The valedictorian is the student who has the highest GPA across all 4 years of high school and the salutatorian is the student who has the 2nd highest GPA across all 4 years of high school.  These honors represent sustained academic excellence and are a huge honor.  The Valedictorian and Salutatorian both get to give speeches at graduation.  Graduation is at 9 AM on June 16th at Spreckels Organ Pavilion in Balboa Park in case it's not on your radar.  All are welcome and encouraged to attend.

Noor Bouzelfane Ashley Ball
Valedictorian Salutatorian

Congratulations Noor and Ashley!

Thanks everyone!

Dr. McCurdy
