Dear Students, Parents, and Guardians,
This is a reminder about Thursday's exhibition. Note that this exhibition is a gallery walk so you do not need to be there exactly at 5:30. Your student will be your guide and once you have seen all of the classes, enjoyed some of the common activities, eaten some pizza (thank you SET PA for providing the food!), and talked to friends, you are welcome to leave. 30 to 45 minutes is a reasonable expectation for the amount of time that you will spend at school, so as long as you are here a little before 6:30, you should be fine.
Parking will continue to be a pain (even though we no longer have the construction excuse), so please allow extra time to figure that out. In your frustration, please avoid using the Boujiemana parking lot (they have been complaining recently) unless you are going there afterwards for dinner. Parking at Cabrillo Heights park or in the neighborhood on the other side of Cabrillo Heights is a good option to just completely avoid the traffic.
Remember that events like these are designed to be student centric with the student explaining their work. The teachers are happy to chit chat, but the student should be the one doing most of the talking. If you have questions or concerns about grades or assignments, please schedule a meeting via email with the teacher for an alternate time. We want to make sure that everyone gets an opportunity to chat with our staff.
The parents came through again with amazing treats for the teachers during SET's version of Teacher Appreciation Week last week. All of the staff felt the love, for sure. Thank you so much for always going above and beyond!
We are almost done with the school year! With all of the fun that we have been having recently, let's make sure to buckle down for the final push into Finals. Both finals days are half days with an early release at 12:30 PM.
We are almost finished with the schedule for next year and will be publishing it soon. Our Juniors (next year's Seniors!) will be scheduling first next Friday, and the other grades will follow on subsequent days.
Graduation is on Fri, 6/5 at 9:00 AM to 12:00 PM at Spreckels Organ Pavilion (it usually ends by 11:30)
Our graduations are open to all and since it is on a school day, we hope to have most of our current students in attendance. Our graduation ceremonies are always amazing celebrations of our individual seniors, and one of the common refrains from graduating parents is that they wish they knew how special our graduations were so that they could have attended earlier ones. Here is your invitation! Don't have any regrets.
Also know that since we do the graduations at the Organ Pavilion, there is plenty of seating. Graduates do not have a limit on the number of people they bring, and there really aren't any bad seats at that venue, so don't stress about needing to get there early to get the best seats.
This year is the first year that we have to deal with the new Balboa Park parking fees. Make sure that you "buy" your free permit early if you haven't already, or pay for the discounted parking at the Organ Pavilion lot. The Organ Pavilion lot is considered level 1 parking and will cost residents $5 for the half-day pass that you'll need. There is free parking close by if you don't mind walking. Either way you'll need to apply for the permit to prove that you're a resident. Have fun learning how to navigate the super confusing website here: https://sandiego.thepermitportal.com/?home=Y In case you want to learn from my mistakes, when you purchase a permit ahead of time, you have to select the date in the Permit Tentative Start Date field. Worst case, you can just purchase the full price parking permit when you arrive.
I want to first thank the staff for putting up with our desire to give our students these experiences. I don't think parents and students realize how much easier it is for teachers to just stick with the routine. Anytime we change the schedule or do something like Community Service Day, College Day, or student retreats, it's always a ton more work for our staff. These experiences are so important for maintaining the culture of our school, so I thank the staff and the parents for indulging us as we force these fun and meaningful events! We try to be as organized as possible, but it's a little bit like herding cats trying to get 250 teenagers to the correct places.
We have 3 staff members who are volunteering their time to do Spring Break trips again next year. We have one Seniors-Only trip to England being led by Mr. Apalategui and we have a service trip to Panama for the younger students being led by Ms. J and Ms. Farias. These trips are not sponsored by SET, so please direct your questions to the teachers who are going on the trips: alberto.a...@sethigh.org, mitra.j...@sethigh.org, leslie...@sethigh.org
Please communicate with the staff members immediately if you are interested because there are limited spots available for each trip.
It is so special that our staff continue to do this every year and is a testament to how great our students are and how strong the relationships are between our students and staff. Here are the details for the two trips:
Thanks everyone!
Dr. McCurdy
