Dear Parents, Students, and Guardians,

This is a quick email to allow me to get in front of what you might be hearing from your students.  I will send out a more complete message later once we know exactly what school is going to look like tomorrow.  For now, know that we have come up with a plan with the students who were going to skip school tomorrow in support of the nationwide protest, to get them to come to school and allow us to provide a safe environment for students of all political beliefs to dialog and express their 1st amendment rights.

I hope that you will trust us to handle this sudden political activation in a way that is safe and respectful.  As I told the students, these kinds of protests usually come with weeks of prior notice which allows us to create a plan with the input of the whole community.  As with most of the country, we only learned about this in the last few days and only got a sense that our students were planning to participate, yesterday.  We just had a meeting with students during lunch today and the students and staff are trying to come up with a last minute plan.  I have not even been able to meet with the teachers about this yet.

My big ask is that you please still send your student to school so that we can have as large a community learning from each other as possible.  All voices and perspectives are valued and will be heard.  What we want to pay particular attention to is making sure that we are being equitable.  The easiest thing for us to do is to cancel school in a situation like this, but that is not equitable to the families who need us to be here (especially on such short notice).  It is also not equitable if families who want to protest cannot afford to take time off from work.  We are committed as staff to be here for those students who have no other choice.  We hope that the rest of our community will understand this and make every effort to support those students who have to be here by also being here.  In the event that the protest results in a disruption to bus service or causes other traffic issues, we of course understand your tardiness or absence.

In the event that there are any off-campus activities that happen near the end of the day, we will need to have parent permission to take the students on a "field-trip".  It is not yet clear when or if that will be happening.

Please stay tuned for a follow-up email that I will be sending tonight once we have a better understanding of the plan for the day.

Thank you for your patience and for your trust in us to handle this sudden and unexpected situation.

Dr. McCurdy
