Hi guys,

I just bougt a Vixen R200SS in very good condition for a good price.
Looking at the rear cell shows it being closed off completley and am wondering if it needs a mod for the rear end so as to ventilate it, or does it
cool down by itself ok.
I usually let my scope sit in the shadows in my partly opened shed so that the mirrors stay the same temp before imaging.
I think that isthe right approach in the winter, but what about summer?

Thanks for any experiance
Brian

Brian,

I have the same scope and have never had a problem with the cool down.

There is a modification that I suggest if it has not been done on your scope.

The clips that hold the mirror overhang the front and will cause diffraction
patterns in the images. You can probably find info on the internet. I used
silicone to secure the mirror instead of the clips. It will get rid of the
diffraction effects.

Regards,

Mike.

Thanks Mike, thats good to hear, as I cant really find much info on cooldown of the scope.
I'll check out the clips when I get it in the mail today, ( was looking at rear cell from pics Ive found).
Its an all stock scope so I will probably get a moonlite focuser for it to handle the load

I was thinking about gluing the 10" mirror in my starfinder down in its cell. I cannot tighten the nylon screws hardly at all or I get pinched optics.
I just hate hearing the mirror shift while slewing.

Thanks!
Brian

Sorry for he late reply Mike, I had to work today.

I did not get any attachments or links in your email to these pictures.
Still pretty interested if you have them posted somewhere.

When I got home, the box was on the porch, I opened it up and there was my new R200SS..well not new but previous owner took care of it rather well.
Now to figure out what I need to hook a dslr up to it. My EQMOD even came in the mail today...Im locked and loaded pretty much.

Here are some images that I took before and after the mod when I first bought the
scope.  I still have it.  I have used it with both 35mm and a ccd.  The stock
focuser is pretty good.  Not great images, but you will get the idea. :)

Mike.

You will notice the effect of the clips on bright stars.

Its your fault you know...
I know...you guys have had what...20 inches of rain in the past two weeks but you send it all this way. All those clouds keep coming here.
We were supposed to have clear skies so they said at the begining of the week, but alas, 6 inches expected starting tomorrow morning through monday, with no chance of clear skies
in the foeseeable forecast.

Ive noticed how backlogged everyone is on all the Astro-tech 8"f/4 imaging newts, so I think thats what the prob is.
Light buckets are useless in this kind of weather, unless you want to modify them to bucket out the rain water

I really dont mind..I like looking at the snow through the window...of my house, not my truck so much.

Clear skies
Brian
