Bob - Thanks for Leading From The Front !

I can make either Sunday July 20 or July 27.  Maybe the Calnder.ly app might make it easy to vote, but you clearly know what you are doing.

Only names I saw you missed were Jim Talens N3JT, Nitin and Jamie kj4tbt.  ( Lizz has “two Zs” )

JMS has confirmed he will host our group’s in-person meeting this Fall at Penn and looks forward to ZOOM.

JMS does recommend earlier in the semester rather than later, which makes sense.

Steve (or anyone) - any idea how much this will cost $$$ ?

My understanding (from my Army AMARS buddy) is the equipment is fairly cheap - under $1000 (one thousand dollars) ?

That is of course IGNORING the amateur radios, which Penn already has.

Not to jump ahead but dollars $$$ are always on my mind and I don’t want to hit any bottlenecks come Fall.

Hello,

There has been a lot of conversation about Mestastic over the weekend. Some of this information may be a repeat but I want to make sure everyone has the background as to how we got to this point.

John Campbell, W3MHZ, emailed me about getting the UP Amateur Radio Club interested in Mesh. I put him in contact with Steve Davidson, K3ZFT, who has experience with Mesh. Prior to this weekend Steve had told me he was interested in expanding Mesh in Philadelphia. John was also looking for a way to build up membership in UPARC. Emails started flying and interest came out of the woodwork.

There are multiple levels of interest in Mesh so I started to look at the groups that were interested. These include: Holmesburg Amateur Radio Club (HARC), UP Amateur Radio Club, U of P non-club members, JFMDNA.org, Red Cross, Individuals,  I have attached an initial list of those interested. You will see several are involved with multiple organizations.

To get us going I'm proposing the following schedule.

1) Organization meeting - Zoom (Leaders of groups speak. Others can listen. This meeting will be a "get to know you"  Define group objective/goal.

2) Each group leader meet with their own group leadership (club board/key participants) with results from #1. Does the group support the objectives mentioned.

3. #1 leaders report back their group's interest.  This might just be an email.

4. Leaders give presentation to their own group (club membership, Penn Student Club Day, etc)

5. Possibly bringing large group together (everyone). Maybe demo, keynote speaker.

6. Groups work on their own project{s}.

All of this is subject to feedback.

I am proposing a Zoom meeting which the Holmesburg ARC will set up on Sunday, July 20 at 10 AM. No longer than 2 hours.  Alternative date Sunday, July 27

Please get back to me this week to let me know if July 20th works.  I left some people off of this email. I'm thinking they are on the W3ABT mail list. If I need to make an adjustment let me know.

Yes will be a ZOOM. We are all attending virtually.

Looks like Sunday July 27 is in the lead but Bob is keeping the tally. W3MHZ

Sorry I have to revise my previous comment. I’ll be in transit on both days at 10 Am so if that’s what works out I can follow up on the notes. Sorry all, very busy July! I’m also talking with Ginger from Philly Mesh to read them in on Wednesday night and I’ve been forwarding emails too. I’ll start including them once they’re on board.

Dan et. all - of course we plan to RECORD the July ZOOM call - so anyone who misses it can watch it as many times as one desires and contribute.

Our HARC people, and hopefully Penn,  are usually pretty good about circulating info / meeting minutes as well.  Bob said he is creating an IO Group.

Best,

Or Element X for Ios.

Bob,

FYI:   Last time I tried setting up a new io group, I found that free ones no longer had all the features we love in our current grandfathered-in io groups.  If this still applies, you will be missing features like photo and file folders, and other (admin?) stuff.  I don’t know what free alternatives there might be these days.

Hi,

I will be setting up a Groups.io tonight.  I don't have access to the UofP mail list. Also in checking with John we are not sure who is on the Penn email list. So there will be a possibility that some of you may get my last email again.  Sorry about that. The mail list will make sure everyone gets the info as well as the ability to receive it in digest form or just log in and see it on the web.

July 29 looks like the meeting date via Zoom.

Is there a reason we can't just use the Discord server and mailing list which already exist?  I worry about having too many different platforms and students tend to prefer Discord.

Jamie - this question this crusty old alum can answer:  “Sure”.  Use the Discord server. - but no one does nor ever has in the history of W3ABT.

you are one of our Computer experts…check the Logs.  No one uses Discord.  our alums are Not logging in to Discord (present company excepted, of course).

on the mailing list - we are at the “pruning stage”  to drop the people who don’t want 839 e-mails re: a Penn Meshtastic Node.

So we are pruning the list to the requested parties.

Jamie,

I agree with you.  Splintering off and not using Discord is an error.

I will try to find the time over the next week to go through the list of email addresses that I have here to try to determine how many are valid and then to identify those individuals by name and callsign (if applicable) along with University affiliation (Alumni, Faculty, Staff or Student).  Thanks for your continued support.
