Sesión especial sobre el telescopio IRAM 30m en la XVI Reunión Científica de la SEA

Es un placer para nosotros anunciar la sesión especial “El telescopio IRAM 30m: una instalación versátil de astronomía (sub)milimétrica” que tendrá lugar el jueves 18 de julio durante la XVI Reunión Científica de la Sociedad Española de Astronomía (SEA) en Granada.

El telescopio IRAM de 30m es una instalación de radio de clase mundial ubicada cerca de Granada, en el Pico Veleta de Sierra Nevada. Es un instrumento versátil, utilizado durante todo el año para realizar observaciones de líneas espectrales y de continuo muy sensibles en un amplio rango de longitudes de onda milimétricas y sub-milimétricas (80 – 370 GHz / 3 – 0.8 mm). Los proyectos científicos que se llevan a cabo con observaciones del 30m cubren una amplia variedad de temas, desde estudios del sistema solar y del medio interestelar hasta galaxias en el Universo de bajo y alto corrimiento al rojo. Además, a través de sinergias con el interferómetro NOEMA, también operado por IRAM, y como antena clave en el conjunto VLBI del Event Horizon Telescope (EHT), el telescopio de 30m se utiliza para estudiar el Universo en alta resolución.

Con esta sesión especial, aprovechamos la oportunidad única de tener a la comunidad astronómica española en nuestra ciudad para difundir el conocimiento sobre la infraestructura y capacidades del telescopio IRAM 30m. La oportunidad de esta sesión se ve aún más enfatizada por la reciente actualización de la infraestructura IRAM 30m para mejorar sus capacidades. La sesión especial se organizará en dos bloques, una sesión de mañana y un almuerzo el jueves 18 de julio. La primera sesión estará dedicada a presentaciones predefinidas sobre el telescopio de 30m, sus capacidades y los resultados científicos más destacados logrados con este instrumento. La sesión del almuerzo consistirá en demostraciones prácticas centradas en cómo solicitar tiempo de observación, realizar, y reducir observaciones con el telescopio de 30m. Debido al formato de la sesión especial y su programa predefinido, no habrá posibilidad de aceptar contribuciones externas.

Dear colleagues

It is our pleasure to announce the special session “The IRAM 30m telescope: a versatile facility for (sub-)mm astronomy” that will take place on Thursday, July 18 during the XVI Scientific meeting of the Spanish Astronomical Society (SEA) in Granada.

The IRAM 30m telescope is a world-class large radio facility located near Granada, on Pico Veleta of Sierra Nevada. It is a versatile instrument, used all around the year to carry out very sensitive spectral line and continuum observations over a broad range of mm and submm wavelengths (80 – 370 GHz / 3 – 0.8 mm). The scientific projects pursued with 30m observations cover a wide range of topics, all the way from solar system and ISM studies to galactic research in the low- and high-redshift Universe. Moreover, through synergies with the NOEMA interferometer which is also operated by IRAM, and as a key antenna in the Event Horizon Telescope (EHT) VLBI array, the 30m telescope is used to study the Universe in high resolution.

With this special session, we take advantage of the unique opportunity to have the broader Spanish astronomical community in our home town to disseminate the knowledge on the IRAM 30m infrastructure and capabilities. The timeliness of this session is further emphasized by the recent upgrade of the IRAM 30m infrastructure to improve its capabilities. The special session will be organized in two blocks, a morning session and a lunch session on Thursday, July 18. The morning session will be devoted to pre-defined presentations about the 30m telescope, its capabilities and highlights of scientific results achieved with this instrument. The lunch session will consist of hand-on tutorials focused on how to request observing time, perform and reduce observations with the 30m telescope. Due to the format of the special session and its pre-defined program there won’t be a possibility to accept external contributions.
