Título: “Recommendations from the ESO's Astro-Weather Working Group for atmospheric monitoring to ensure an efficient operation of the EELT....and also for our ICTS”

Ponente: Julio Castro-Almazán (IAC)

Resumen: The ELT will be the largest optical and IR telescope ever built. Aware of the challenges involved in its operation and calibration, ESO promoted the creation of 13 specialized working groups in 2019, in coordination with the instrument consortia and the interested community. In particular, the Astro-Weather group aimed to identify the atmospheric variables that will need to be monitored during the telescope's operation, taking into account the requirements of both facility and instruments. The selection of these variables, ranging from basic meteorology to precipitable water vapor content or the parameters associated with the turbulence profile, was followed by a categorisation into three priority levels, the identification of techniques and sensors, and a cost estimate. Formal work concluded in 2021, with the release of a comprehensive report. However, the tasks and discussions that took place during the working sessions set the benchmark for operational site-testing for the ongoing and future astronomical facilities and the observatories hosting them. The Spanish participation in the Astro-Weather group was channeled through our participation in the IFU spectrograph HARMONI. In this talk, we will summarise the conclusions and decisions reached.
