Dear Colleagues,
I am contacting you on behalf of the MUSTI team as we are looking for
complementary science cases for our proposed ESA F-class space
mission. MUSTI is a compact high resolution (R=20000), high precision
(<2" pointing precision) Far UV (120-210 nm) spectrograph with the
primary science goal of better understanding the winds and internal
mixing processes in massive stars. It was originally proposed as a
mini-Fast mission, but after the Phase-1 proposal it was upgraded to the
Fast category. This means that the duration, funding and scope of the
mission can be expanded quite a bit, which is where you come in. We are
currently looking for complementary science cases where such an
instrument could be game changing in your field.
A few important details: The current timeline for the mission would
have MUSTI launch in 2034 with a nominal mission length of 4 years,
allowing us to bridge the gap between HST re-entry and the launch of the
HWO, when as of now we would be blind in the Far UV. 15% of the total
observing time will be reserved for Complementary Science of which we
hope to include ~5 science cases. The optical design would make MUSTI
~5-10 times more sensitive than IUE, and attached to this email I have
included a plot with the expected instrument throughput as a function of
wavelength.
From a technical perspective, Spain is the second largest contributor
to the mission (after the primary proposing country Belgium) and as such
we want to ensure that the wider Spanish community benefits
scientifically from this mission through their involvement in and/or
leadership of complementary science cases. To this end, if you think
MUSTI may be useful for your science, we invite you to fill out the
following (quick) google form before Monday March 30. With this
information in hand, we will propose your science cases to be included
among the ~5 complementary science cases included in the Phase 2 proposal.

If you have any comments, questions or concerns, or would like
additional information, please don't hesitate to reach out.
Best regards,
Michael Abdul-Masih (on behalf of the MUSTI consortium)
