TWO-YEAR POSTDOCTORAL POSITION AT UNIVERSIDAD DE LA SERENA (CHILE)

Applications are invited for a two-year postdoctoral position at the Universidad de La Serena (ULS, Chile) to work on the structure of nearby interacting galaxies. The selected candidate will work with Prof. Virginia Cuomo and collaborators on a Comité Mixto ESO - Government of Chile funded project. In particular, the selected candidate will lead an innovative study of bars in interacting galaxies, using proprietary data from the observational photometric survey INTERBARS@VST, led by Prof. Cuomo and including several renowned international collaborators.

The candidate must hold a PhD in Astronomy or a related field by the starting date of the contract. For international applicants they must submit their PhD degree apostilled or legalized by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs or equivalent. Experience with optical photometric data in narrow and broad bands is desirable but not required. The starting date will be agreed upon with the selected candidate, but ideally, it will be early 2025. The annual gross salary for this position is $29,500,000 CLP, which is competitive according to local standards. The position includes an annual operating amount for computing, publications, meeting travel, etc.

The selected postdoc will have access to 10% Chilean time at all professional observatories operating in Chile, including ESO-Paranal, La Silla, ALMA, Gemini-South, Vera Rubin, Las Campanas, CTIO, as well as future facilities such as GMT and E-ELT, and will be encouraged to lead their own projects.

The Astronomy Department at ULS provides a welcoming and dynamic working environment, composed of 13 faculty members + many collaborators, 7 postdocs, ~20 graduate students, and over 60 undergraduate students:

ULS, located in the beautiful and tourist-friendly coastal city of La Serena, is one of the most important public universities in northern Chile and is very close to the aforementioned international observatories.
