Título:  PIF2025 - Unveiling AGN Feeding and Feedback Across Cosmic Time with the James Webb Space Telescope (AGN-JWST) (PID2024-159902NA-100)

Centro:  Centro de Astrobiología (CAB, INTA-CSIC), Madrid

Tipo:  Predoctoral

descripción:

The Centro de Astrobiología (CAB, INTA-CSIC) announces a selection process for a predoctoral contract to the national project PID2024-159902NA-I00 (Estudio de los procesos de acreción y retroalimentación en núcleos activos de galaxias a través del tiempo cósmico con el telescopio espacial James Webb); PIs. Ismael Garcia-Bernete & Michele Perna.

The James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) is the most powerful observatory ever deployed in space and is transforming our understanding of galaxy evolution. This project aims to investigate how supermassive black holes grow and influence their host galaxies across cosmic time, taking full advantage of JWST's unprecedented sensitivity and resolution.

By analysing multiple AGN tracers and applying advanced diagnostic tools, we will study AGN-driven outflows and their interaction with the host galaxy's interstellar medium, evaluating their effects on galactic structures, kinematics, and the chemical composition of gas, dust, and molecules at different epochs. We will also explore the feeding processes that fuel black hole growth, such as gas inflows and environmental mechanisms.

The PhD candidate will participate in the analysis of JWST and complementary multi-wavelength datasets, modelling of AGN emission, and the interpretation of results within the broader framework of galaxy evolution. The project is led by Dr. Michele Perna and Dr. Ismael García-Bernete at the Centro de Astrobiología (CAB, CSIC-INTA), in collaboration with international partners

Interested candidates should send their CV, academic transcripts for both their undergraduate and Master’s degrees, and the email address of a previous supervisor willing to provide a reference. Please submit the material by November 30, 2025, to: Ismael García-Bernete (igbe...@cab.inta-csic.es) and Michele Perna (mpe...@cab.inta-csic.es).

Salary level, selection process, and further details can be found at PIF2025 call website.

Título:  Predoctoral Fellowship at University of Florida

Centro:  University of Florida

Tipo:  Predoctoral

descripción:

The Department of Astronomy at the University of Florida (UF) invites applications from Spanish National prospective Ph.D. students. Applicants will be considered for a funded position in the UF Astronomy Ph.D. program supported under the UF-IAC protocol for collaboration.  We particularly encourage applicants who are interested in areas of research that align with our current faculty (https://astro.ufl.edu/research/) or who would benefit from UF research resources (e.g. https://astro.ufl.edu/research/telescopes/)

Candidates should have strong backgrounds in physics, mathematics, and computing.  An astronomy background is helpful, but not required.  The UF Graduate School requires a previous college degree maintaining a GPA of 3.0 or equivalent (roughly equal to Grade=7, or “Notable", in Spain). The Department of Astronomy does not require the physics or general GRE for application. UF requires proficiency in spoken and written academic English. Score reports are valid for two years from the date of testing, and must be reported electronically to the University of Florida. UF's TOEFL and GRE school code is 5812. Minimum english proficiency test scoring requirements for graduate applicants can be found on the UF Graduate School’s website (https://admissions.ufl.edu/apply/international/).

Complete applications require:

(i) A personal statement identifying how your background will enable your success in our our graduate program and why you are interested in pursuing a Ph.D. in Astronomy from UF,

(ii) A resume or CV,

(iii) Official transcripts with translation into English for all undergraduate coursework as well as any graduate coursework if taken (unofficial English translations are acceptable for the initial review.  Accepted students will be required to provide a transcript evaluation from any member of the National Association of Credential Evaluation Services before an official offer can be extended),

and

(iv) Three letters of recommendation.  Letters of recommendation should detail the attributes that applicants possess that will result in their ability to pursue graduate work in Astronomy.  Applicants for this opportunity should submit their materials to "coordinacion....@iac.es" . Deadline December 31, 2025.

Questions about the UF Astronomy graduate program can be addressed by consulting the UF Astronomy website (https://astro.ufl.edu) and in particular the page on graduate admissions (https://astro.ufl.edu/graduate-studies/admissions/) and the frequently asked questions (https://astro.ufl.edu/graduate-studies/faq/).

Additional questions about the UF graduate program or UF admissions can be addressed to the Graduate Admission chairs at grad...@astro.ufl.edu.

descripción:

IRAM seeks a new Front-End (FE) engineer at IRAM/Granada. Reporting to the FE Group team leader, the successful candidate is expected to be co-responsible for the correct operation of existing receivers and associated subsystems, ensuring the seamless conduction of routine observationts at the  30-meter telescope in Pico Veleta. Active participation in relevant activities like telescope surface measuring, monitoring and correction are also required as part of the duties. He/she is also expected to participate in the design, construction and integration of new RF and millimeter wave subsystems and instruments into the 30-meter observatory. Technical assessments, laboratory testing, system checkups and performance reviews, and vendor/third-party interactions are also part of the role.

Regular and exceptional on-demand trips to the observatory at nearly 3,000 meters are and off-site daytime on-call service duty -approximately two weekends per month- is required.

Required Qualifications:

  • University degree in Telecommunication, Electronic engineering or Physics,
  • Good knowledge and proven experience on low noise high frequency RF or/and millimeter wave systems,
  • General electronics and electrical systems,
  • Software development (python, C/C++, bash scripting, etc.),
  • CAD (mechanical) and Simulation SW for RF / microwave,
  • Measurement techniques in RF / microwave,
  • Analytical and critical thinking for problem debugging and solving,
  • Good reporting and documenting abilities,
  • Good communications skills, as this is of special importance in the multicultural working environment of IRAM,
  • Ability of working independently as well as in small and multidisciplinary teams, even under pressure.
  • Good English skills, both written and oral. Interviews will be held in English.
  • Ability to work at 3,000 meters, as the work might require staying at the observatory during several days, especially during the installation or commissioning of new instruments.

Highly desirable additional qualifications:

  • Ability to speak and understand Spanish,
  • Knowledge of astronomy and astronomical observatories and techniques,
  • Acquainted with millimeter/sub-millimeter receiver technologies such as cryogenics, quasi-optics, vacuum techniques, superconducting detectors and mixers,
