Tracing AGN nebular emission from the UV to the mid-IR across cosmic epochs
Abstract: Disentangling the relative contribution of AGN and star formation to nebular emission is key to understanding the evolution of the most massive galaxies and the role of black hole feedback across cosmic time. Rest-frame UV and mid-IR emission lines provide powerful diagnostics that complement and extend classical optical diagrams. I will present AGN versus star formation diagnostic diagrams in the UV and mid-IR based on photoionization model predictions, and show how these models can be exploited through their implementation in spectral fitting tools. Specifically, at high redshift I will showcase results from JWST/NIRSpec observations of rest-frame UV emission lines in galaxies modeled with BEAGLE-AGN. I will then focus on JWST/MIRI spectroscopy of nearby AGN analyzed with HOMERUN, including results from the recent MIRACLE (Mid-IR Activity of Circumnuclear Line Emission) program. In the local Universe, MIRACLE provides a detailed, spatially resolved view of the circumnuclear gas, allowing us to robustly quantify the ionization structure and energetics of AGN-driven regions. These results demonstrate how UV and mid-IR spectral features provide complementary constraints on AGN activity across different redshift regimes.
