Jet-driven fireworks: The peculiar morphology in a Seyfert 2 galaxy

Abstract: Active galactic nuclei (AGNs) are powered by accretion onto supermassive black holes, releasing energy capable of dominating the host galaxy’s emission and driving strong interactions with the interstellar medium (ISM). This coupling produces feedback processes that generate turbulence, outflows, and coronal-line emission. ESO137-G034 provides an excellent laboratory for studying such mechanisms due to the presence of a jet in strong interaction with the ISM. HST [O III] observations reveal a conical structure and a distinctive Z-shaped morphology, while ATCA data show three radio lobes aligned with emitting regions, indicating mechanical feedback. The nuclear region is obscured at UV/optical wavelengths, making its exact position uncertain. Using integral-field spectroscopy from SINFONI (VLT) and MIRI-MRS (JWST), we determine the nuclear position, map the ionized and coronal gas, and compare the near- and mid-infrared regimes. Coronal emission such as [Ne V] extends up to ~1.1 kpc, forming lobes and filaments. Line-ratio maps reveal shock-dominated regions, a prominent ionization cone, and areas of high ionization. These results indicate that ESO137-G034 hosts strong and extended AGN feedback, with filamentary coronal structures and outer lobes whose flux exceeds that of the nuclear region, making it a particularly remarkable case in the literature.
