Last Saturday the Wixey WR550 "REMOTE PLANER READOUT" on the Powermatic Planer needed re-calibration.  That shouldn't be required unless the batteries die/are removed, the sensor cable is disconnected, or the ON/OFF switch is held in for 3-5 seconds (which initiates the calibration process).
Since the device will automatically turn itself off after a period of non-use (also without loss of calibration), users need to know how to properly turn it on - it can't be made fail safe.  In addition to the signage on the planers, I produced the attachment to hopefully help with that and provide additional usage guidance.  I plan to laminate copies and tape them to the top of the 20" planer (and the 15" planer if it fits) on Sunday.
Please make log entries with details as soon as you think that the device needs re-calibration.  Also, please pass this information to those class instructors and TAs that don't see these discussions so they can relay it to their students.

Additional signage was added to the planers to in an attempt to preserve their Wixeys' accuracies without such frequent re-calibration.  Calibration procedures have been added to the back of the planers' hanging placards and a calibration test block has been provided that can be used to easily determine when re-calibration is necessary.  The "Wixey WR550 Placards.pdf" attachment provides details.   The other attachment is Wixey's manual for the device.

Dear Fellow Shift Supervisors,

Good afternoon. I’m in need of coverage for my 10-1 shift on 10/31. I’ve been scheduled for a medical procedure, and according to plan, I will be higher than a kite from the anesthesia. Probably not a suitable state to be in while supervising (or so I’ve been told).

I’d greatly appreciate if one of you could cover that shift, I’m happy to take one of your future shifts as well.

Many thanks!

Lynn

Yesterday (January 1, 2025) the Lock Knob for the Powermatic planer Wixey thickness gauge was sitting on top of the Shift Supervisor station.  It apparently had not been tightened properly after having been loosened during re-calibration.  The attachment shows how to properly check and calibrate those gauges.  Entries in the Shop Log when either of the gauges are found to be out of calibration and/or re-calibrated would be helpful and appreciated.
