“Trusting our engagement with fourth wall breaks," Ella LaRose,
University of Arizona
Fictional characters exist within their fictions; they do not possess the capability to see into the real world. We do not sit down to read the next chapter of our favorite book and find fictional characters commenting on whether our shirt washes us out, how
dim the lighting is within our room, or whether we are living up to our potential. Fourth wall breaks challenge this assumption—it feels like we are being seen, understood, and spoken to in a wholly unconventional way. This talk explores to what extent we
should trust this feeling, and whether or not fourth wall breaks are illusions.
Ella LaRose is a fourth-year Philosophy Ph.D. candidate at the University of Arizona. She is a Russell J. And Dorothy S. Bilinski Fellow. Ella mainly works on issues
in aesthetics. Her current projects tend to exist at the intersection of aesthetics and philosophy of language. She is currently working on her dissertation on fourth wall breaks in film and across other media. You can find her website
