Assistant Professor - Film Studies

University of North Carolina Wilmington

The Department of Film Studies at the University of North Carolina Wilmington (UNCW) invites applications for one or two tenure-track positions at the rank of Assistant Professor to begin August 2026.

The successful candidates will teach a variety of undergraduate and graduate courses in their areas of research as well as core courses in film art, film theory, film historiography, and world cinema. The department seeks candidates whose work will expand our existing historical and/or international coverage. Applicants should demonstrate potential for teaching excellence and scholarly productivity.

Candidates must possess a PhD in Film Studies or a related discipline. ABD applicants will be considered; however, if PhD is not confirmed by August 1, 2026, appointment will be at the rank of Lecturer for the first academic year of employment, and PhD must be conferred by July 1, 2027 for eligibility of continued employment. Strong preference will be given to candidates with a PhD in Film Studies at the time of application.

Applications will be accepted until 11:59PM EST on Monday, December 1, 2025, the posting closing date. To apply, complete the online application at https://jobs.uncw.edu/postings/37658 and attach the following materials as Adobe PDF documents:

·    Cover Letter/Letter of Application addressed to Search Committee Chair that includes a 1-3 page statement that 1) describes research and teaching experience and interests, and 2) addresses the ways in which the applicant’s work expands the department’s existing historical and/or international coverage

·    Curriculum Vita

·    Writing Sample of no more than 30 pages

·    List of Three (3) Professional References (if ABD, one must be from Dissertation Chair). References may be used to request letters during the screening process.

·    If needed, applicants may upload additional materials under the Other category.

Prior to the official appointment to the university, the candidate(s) selected for hire must be able to demonstrate eligibility to teach assigned courses by successfully meeting the credentialing requirements based on official transcripts and other documentation as required.
