Hi Scio Flyers Flyers,

Following the close call on the flight line last week, it is critical that we review and strictly enforce our field safety protocols. To ensure the safety of our members and to protect our privilege to use the Scio Township Hall park, all pilots must review and adhere to the official club rules below.

Please pay specific attention to our flight line boundaries, including the strict east-west line rule.

1. Flight Line Protocol & Boundaries

  • The Flight Line Rule: Absolutely no flying over the Flight Line, which includes an imaginary line running east and west for the entire length of the flying field.

  • Buffer Zones: No flying within 25 feet of the flight line, and never fly directly at the flight line. No flying over the Scio Township Hall or the parking lot.

  • Distance Limits: No flying closer than half the distance toward the fire station, the farmhouse, the school, and the houses to the west.

  • Passes and Landings: All touch-and-goes and high-speed passes must be executed at or beyond the centerline of the field. Hand launching and landings must never put other pilots on the flight line in jeopardy.

  • Pilot Stations: Pilots must stand on or near one of the 5 stones on the Flight Line. A maximum of 5 planes are allowed in the air at one time.

  • Hours: No flying before 9:00 a.m.

2. AMA Membership Requirements

  • You must have your current AMA membership card on your person and present it when asked. If your membership is expired or missing, you cannot fly.

  • Students/Guests: Anyone without an AMA membership must register in the AMA's Introductory Pilot Program and fly under the direct supervision of a designated club Introductory Pilot Member (IPM). To find an instructor, see us at the field or call Jim at 734-408-1392.

3. Pilot Conduct & Equipment

  • Only pilots are allowed beyond the frequency board.

  • Frequency Control: 72 MHz frequency flags must be used and displayed on transmitters before powering on (flags are not required for 2.4 GHz).

  • Noise Limits: All gas or glow engines must meet the 92 dB noise standard.

  • Helicopters: No flying within 25 feet of the flight line. Pilots may move forward beyond the flight line only if no other pilots are currently flying.

4. Prohibited Activities & General Field Rules

  • Speed Limit: There is a strict 5 mph speed limit on the gravel road leading back to the field. Please drive slowly to respect our neighbors and the township.

  • Model rocketry is strictly prohibited.

  • Operating aircraft under the influence of alcohol/intoxicants, or consuming them on field property, is strictly prohibited.

đź’ˇ A Note on Skill Building: If last week's close call has you feeling like you need to shake off some rust or build up your flight confidence, please take advantage of our Wednesday training sessions (starting today at 5:30 PM). It is the perfect, low-pressure environment to practice with a spotter and transition your simulator skills to the real field.

Above all, common sense prevails. Let's look out for one another and keep Scio Field safe and enjoyable for everyone.

If you have any questions, please reach out to a club officer at the field.

Safe flying,

Scio Flyers Leadership Team
