Dear Michael OBrien,

2025 SARA Board Member Nominations

Hello, SARA Member. It is once again time to elect a Southern Arizona Rocketry Association Board of Directors, this time for 2025.

Our club functions through the actions of the Board, a group of elected volunteers that organize our operations and handle the requirements of being a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization. The Board is supported by the volunteer efforts of many of you.

Many of our current board members have served for lengthy periods of time. We find that new board members bring vitality to our organization. Current and new SARA members can and are invited to join the board, which provides opportunities for more of our club members to serve.

As a SARA member, please do one of two things:

1) Nominate club members for each position listed below. You may nominate the person currently holding the position, or a new person.

2) Nominate yourself to serve this club in the position of your choice. Prepare to serve for at least a one-year.

Email your nominations to secr...@sararocketry.org. Simply state in your email: I nominate (club member) for the position of 2025 (Board position).

The 2025 Board of Directors will be announced and sustained at our 2024 Annual Club Meeting (date, time, location TBD).

Fellow rocketeers:

Yesterday at the TIMPA site my 4" Hawk decided to fly directly north east. There was proper chute deployment and I believe it was a successful landing, I looked for over an hour and it appears that it has landed way past all the fencing on the east side. I understand that this is city property. any chance of gaining access to this property so I can recover the rocket?
Any assistance would be appreciated.

Hi Llyn,

Thanks for asking. The area due east and southeast are City of Tucson land that we have asked for recovery access, and been told a hard "no."  Or it may have been "Hell No." So there is no recovery possible in parcels shown below as 213310240 and 213320250. Attempts to recover there put the club at direct risk of losing permission from the city to use the TIMPA site. The land to the northeast is federal land, where we do not have permission to recover. While the lack of permission to recover on federal land is slightly less severe than on the eastern and southeastern city parcels, it's all land related to the TAP aqueduct, so it's going to be sensitive for the land owners. The land to the south and southwest of TIMPA is State Land trust land, and access is possible there with appropriate individual permits from the state.

We have verbal permission from the city of Tucson to recover on parcels 20845005A, 208450090, and 208450080 to the north and west, but we need to obtain permission to recover on the 2 small private properties within those areas.

Here's an area map showing the property boundaries, and also a link to SARA's published guidelines about the surrounding properties.

Thanks for the reply, I understood that we could not access that area.  Was hoping that I misunderstood which area was which.  So the rocket is a total loss and that's a shame. Fortunately the motor was disposable and I was not using electronics, so I could have been much worse. I built that rocket 10 years ago and has flown many times.
I'm re thinking flying large rockets now I'm 73 now and I dislike running around in the desert looking for rockets that maybe 1/2 a mile or more away. I may have my last large rocket and motors for sale here soon.
