For many of us, the summers we spent at our Camp St. Sava weren’t just weeks of fun—they were experiences that shaped who we are. We found friendships that have lasted a lifetime, learned lessons about our Orthodox religion and the importance of our Serbian culture and community and created memories that have stayed with us long after we left.
Our beloved camp holds so much significance for so many of us. It’s a place where we discovered the magic of being away from the hustle of everyday life, where we connected to something bigger and purer. For us, the camp is full of treasured memories—mornings raising the flags, trips to the candy store (and later Mel’s), religion classes with Father Dusan, the fight to win dorm inspections, afternoons at the pool, yearly camp crushes, shaving cream fights, teen camp, years of being campers (and then counselors), talent shows, kolo dancing under the starlit skies, field trips, running to the “shack and back,” learning the S-E-R-B-I-A-N song, arts and crafts, and the simple joy of being surrounded by people who became like family. It was a place where we could be our truest selves, and that was a gift that helped shape our lives in ways we may not have realized at the time.
As we know, though the memories remain timeless, the buildings that hosted our experiences are not immune to the passage of time. Sadly, the roofs over some of the camp’s most cherished spaces, including the boy’s and girl’s dorms as well as the KSS Hall, are in dire need of replacement. They’ve weathered years of the summer heat and winter storms, and now, they are barely holding on. Without immediate attention, the damage will worsen, the leaks will get worse, and parts of the camp that we hold dear may become unsafe or unusable.
We are reaching out to you today because Camp St. Sava needs our help. Together, we have the chance to ensure that future generations of children can create their own lifelong memories under those same roofs, in those same beloved spaces. Whether it was your childhood home away from home or simply a place that made a difference in your life, the camp now needs your generosity.
