Release 1.56 of ROR came out on Tuesday, adding 67 new records and updating an impressive 2084 existing records. As always, the new metadata is immediately available in the ROR API and can be downloaded from Zenodo at
https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6347574.
If you missed yesterday's Community Call, you can take a look at the slides and recording at
https://ror.org/events/2024-11-20-ror-community-call/. Note that in addition to the usual updates and a great couple of featured presentations from the MESR / OpenAlex Works Magnet (community metadata correction tool) and the US Global Change Information System, there were also a few important technical announcements.
- We are currently implementing a minor change to the ROR schema (but not the API).
Schema 2.1 adds country subdivisions (such as U.S. states) back to ROR records as well as adding continent information (such as Africa). We plan for this new location information to be available before the end of the year.
- We are also in the early stages of
deprecating v1 of the ROR schema and API. The ROR API default will be changed from v1 to v2 in
July 2025, and requests with no version in the URL will receive the v2 response.
- ROR API v1 will be discontinued
at the end of 2025. We'll continue to send lots of reminders about this!
- We are also beginning a
phased implementation of client identification on the ROR API, synced with the deprecation of v1. We plan to start supporting a registration system for client IDs in Q1 of 2025, and at the same time we deprecate API v1, we will begin requiring users of the API to have a client ID in order to continue at the current rate limits (2000 requests in a 5-minute period).
The draft and final proposals for these changes are available at
https://ror.readme.io/v2/docs/feedback-docs Again, we'll give you plenty of notice and send many reminders -- like this one!
