Subject: ASH Research Opportunities for Underrepresented Minority Medical Students & Residents

Dear members of the Student National Medical Association,

The American Society of Hematology (ASH) is now accepting applications for two research opportunities for underrepresented minority medical students and residents interested in hematology. Please find below brief program descriptions with links to the award webpages and attached electronic program posters to share with your students, colleagues and network.

Minority Medical Student Award Program
The Minority Medical Student Award Program (MMSAP) provides underrepresented minority medical students with an opportunity to conduct a research project under the supervision of an ASH member, receive guidance from a career development mentor, gain valuable knowledge of hematology, and ultimately, advance their careers. Each year, up to 10 minority medical students enrolled in DO, MD, or MD/PhD programs are selected to participate. Students can select from three MMSAP options:

  • Summer research experience for minority medical students between their first and second year of medical school, to be conducted during the summer break with a laboratory- or clinically-based hematology investigator.
  • Flexible research experience for minority medical students in their first, second, or third year of medical school, to be completed over the course of a year (approximately 320-480 hour commitment).
  • Yearlong research experience for minority medical students interested completing a full-time, yearlong research experience in between their first and second, second and third, or third and fourth year of medical school.

Minority Resident Hematology Award Program
The Minority Resident Hematology Award Program (MRHAP) is designed to provide support for underrepresented minority resident physicians in an internal medicine, pathology, or pediatric residency program in the United States or Canada to conduct hematology focused research. Resident physicians, including Minority Medical Student Award Program alumni who enrolled in one of the above residency programs and resident physicians who have applied to or matched early into a hematology-oncology fellowship program are encouraged to apply. Residents must be in their first or second year of residency.

For the purposes of this program, minority is defined as a group of people from racial and ethnic groups that have been shown to be underrepresented in health-related sciences in the United States and Canada. This includes American Indians or Alaska Natives, Blacks or African Americans, Hispanics or Latinos, Native Hawaiians or Other Pacific Islanders, African Canadians, Inuit, and First Nation Peoples.
