Hi Tim,
Yes, indeed it's not about the platform, but somehow it helps.
Hi Jerome, here are my thoughts on this:
- Since Restlet is hosted in GitHub, users and developers can easily be added to the discussion group
- Contributors can help users
- Users can help other users
- It will make Restlet as a community more self-sustaining
With Gitter, any Github user can be added easily the same way, and not just Github, GitLab users too.At the moment other Java devs from other Gitter groups have jumped to the group now showing how easy it is for devs to hang out in Gitter.
So it would be a good mix of Java devs from different communities.
Also, Gitter is easy to install on phones (Android, iOS alike) and very much mobile user-friendly allowing even developers on the go to hang out.
We have some members now in https://gitter.im/restlet-framework/community so I was looking as to how to transfer it to the "https://gitter.im/restlet" home instead.

Hi all,
While this GitHub feature is still experimental, we can activate it already which I just did for Restlet Framework, while clearly marking is as experimental for now with a link to the mailing list: https://github.com/restlet/restlet-framework-java/discussions
@cyberquarks I would be curious to understand how Gitter compares to GitHub Discussions and would help the community achieve what your outline in this issue:
- Since Restlet is hosted in GitHub, users and developers can easily be added to the discussion group
- Contributors can help users
- Users can help other users
- It will make Restlet as a community more self-sustaining
Can you elaborate and help us compare?
Best regards,Jerome

Objet : Re: Discussion channelSeems like it would be worth waiting for GitHub Discussions. This mailing list and StackOverflow are doing a reasonable job for now. The traffic on this mailing list is indeed low, but I also don?t get a sense that people are holding back from the mailing list simply because it isn?t Gitter or Slack.

Hi Tim,
As per docs: "Note: GitHub Discussions is currently in beta and subject to change."

--Hello,
Yes that would be much better to agree on an official chat forum and then actively promote it on the project website and GH repository.
I would like to understand why you recommend Gitter versus Slack for example?
Also, GitHub has launched a Discussions feature that look interesting:
My other idea is to consider closing this mailing list and replace it with this new conversation channel, plus GitHub comments and StackOverflow for the sake of simplicity.
Other thoughts?Jerome

Objet : Discussion channelHi Jerome Louvel,
Warning! External email. Exercise caution when opening attachments or clicking any links.
I started a "Unofficial" Gitter channel for Restlet but since you mention that an official one would be more appropriate then that would be great.
Upon checking there's already an account: https://gitter.im/restlet/home
Which I suppose the official one, just with no room yet. --
