Description: Merit MTU Equipment rack Move resulting in full internet outage

Member Impact: All REMC1 Members

Services Impact: All Internet Services

Comment: Merit Communications (the internet provider for REMC1 and all members) is being forced to move their equipment rack located at Michigan Technological University. A small group of days for the move was offered to Merit. Wednesday was selected so that any equipment that failed to power back on (unlikely but most equipment has been powered up for years) could be driven up OR shipped next day air. A weekend window would not allow for this. There are many uncommon specialized Fiber optic transport pieces being powered down for the move and a few pieces are not in stock at Merit. The scope of work does NOT include any fiber cuts or fiber moves which would otherwise increase the likelihood of unforeseen issues. Equipment will be powered down and physically relocated to the opposite side of the room where it will be plugged back in via fiber patch cables. This event should be straight forward and wrap within the maintenance window. It is believed MTU is enforcing these dates in earl y June as the outage will also bring MTU down and these dates are in-between Spring and Summer semester where the outage will have less affect for MTU. This helps explain why later dates are not offered by MTU. Also, MTU is a governing member of Merit Communications.

In closing all REMC1 Internet services will be down on Wednesday 6/1 at 8PM and the window will close 6/2 at 6am Eastern time during Merit's MTU datacenter rack move. Merit does not anticipate a need for the whole maintenance window but please plan accordingly. REMC1 Voice service will failover to alternate call paths and will otherwise not be affected.
