Comment: This event is cancelled until the 7 day range between 6/4/2022 and 6/9 exact date yet to be determined.
More information: REMC1 has been working with Merit and MTU to move this date as the original date of Thursday 5/4 could have presented extreme impact to MSTEP testing and other important services if an extended outage was realized from the maintenance. We are pleased to announce that after much negotiation a later date will be scheduled between 6/4 and 6/9. A date of post-6/9 could not be negotiated. Please watch out for a finalized date and time in the near future.
REMC1 Voice service will fail over to alternate call paths and will otherwise be unaffected.
On Thursday 5/5 starting at 6PM EST and ending at 10PM EST Merit Communications (the internet provider for REMC1 and all members) is being forced to move their equipment rack located at Michigan Technological University. A small group of days for the move was offered to Merit. Thursday was selected so that any equipment that failed to power back on (unlikely but most equipment has been powered up for years) could be driven up OR shipped next day air. A weekend window would not allow for this. There are many uncommon specialized Fiber optic transport pieces being powered down for the move and a few pieces are not in stock at Merit. The scope of work does NOT include any fiber cuts or fiber moves which would otherwise increase the likelihood of unforeseen issues. Equipment will be powered down and physically relocated to the opposite side of the room where it will be plugged back in via fiber patch cables. This event should be straight forward and wrap within the maintenance window. It is believed MTU is enforcing these dates in early May as the outage will also bring MTU down and these dates are in-between Spring and Summer semester where the outage will have less affect for MTU. This helps explain why later dates are not offered by MTU. Also, MTU is a governing member of Merit Communications.
In closing all REMC1 Internet services will be down on Thursday 5/5 between 6PM and 10PM Eastern time during Merit's MTU datacenter rack move. REMC1 Voice service will fail over to alternate call paths and will otherwise not be affected.
