US Sailing Championships for Youth Cancelled in 2020

BRISTOL, R.I. (May 5, 2020) – The US Sailing Championship Committee Chairs made the decision to officially cancel US Sailing Championships for youth scheduled in 2020 following weeks of collaboration and consultation with championship host clubs around the country.

On April 13, US Sailing and the Pensacola Yacht Club (Fla.) announced that they decided to postpone the 2020 U.S. Youth Sailing Championships due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The premiere youth sailing event in the U.S. was originally scheduled for June 20-24, 2020 in Pensacola, Fla. The 2020 U.S. Youth Sailing Championships have now been officially cancelled. Due to this cancellation, the Athlete Selection system for the 2020 Youth Worlds is now under review.

The U.S. Youth Match Racing Championship, U.S. Junior Women's Singlehanded and Doublehanded Championships, and the Chubb U.S. Junior Championships are also cancelled for 2020.

“We are very disappointed about the cancelation of our Youth Championships, as we know so many young sailors have prepared and trained for a long time and the host clubs have been working hard as well,” said Jack Gierhart, CEO of US Sailing. “The safety of sailors and the sailing community is paramount and after much internal discussion and collaboration with the host clubs, we decided it prudent for all parties to cancel these regattas in 2020. We look forward to these championships coming back online in 2021, and preparing the necessary measures to host these events safely in 2021 and beyond.”

Registration fee refunds will be processed within the next 10 days. Please contact US Sailing with any questions by email at Champi...@USSailing.org.
