I hope everyone has been enjoying their summer. And now it’s time to get ready for the upcoming school year! As you have seen in the schedule, our Fall is going to look a lot different from past years. We will be using as many days of the week as possible to accommodate our sailors. We will have 1-month long sessions. Our class sizes will be kept small, and isolated from other classes. In order to make the small groups/practice as productive as possible we have distinguished the Race Team into two levels: Gold and Silver.
When we begin a new season, Udi and I have goal meetings with each sailor as well as the skipper/crew pairs to discuss the upcoming season, their plan for improvement and the regatta schedule. We send out questionnaires to the sailors to help give us more data points. Udi and I then spend an exorbitant amount of time going over each sailor, discussing their strengths, weaknesses, personalities, etc. And we filter it into a spreadsheet to help guide our season and how to push the sailors at the appropriate speed/level. The current health/safety guidelines are preventing us from having those goal meetings in person but we will be meeting virtually with each class to ensure we are all on the same page and ready to make the four weeks as productive as possible.
For your reference, I have attached the guidelines Udi and I use to determine your sailor’s current status. We use this throughout the season to ensure that sailors are making progress, and to see where we need to adjust the practice plan when certain skills are lacking. Everyone that is a current Race Team member will be getting an email from myself and Udi this week stating which class you should sign up for this season. Again, we have two Gold sessions and one Silver, with each class being a month in duration. It is going to be a challenge to get everyone sailing this Fall due to the class sizes being small. But I am hopeful that one of the sessions will work.
This pandemic has thrown everyone for a loop. Our goal at PY is to provide everyone with some sense of normalcy in a safe way. This is possible when all of us work together by keeping our contact circle small, wearing masks, social distancing, staying home when we think we might not feel good and being smart. This summer worked because of your help following these guidelines. I know that our community will continue to do the work to keep all of us healthy, and our kids sailing! I will be having a virtual Info Night on August 12th at 5pm. If you have questions please feel free to email me so I can share the answers with everyone this coming week. I hope you all had a good weekend and are getting ready for the upcoming season! —Molly
