Save the Date!
The Laboratory for Atmospheric and Space Physics (LASP) and Southwest Research Institute (SwRI) have generously volunteered to host the 2026 VEXAG annual meeting in Boulder, Colorado. Please save October 8 and 9 on your calendars for the in-person meeting (a virtual option will also be available). A field trip is being planned for Saturday October 10th. A website for the meeting will be set up and the link will be provided when it is available in a future listserve post.
A huge thank you to LASP and SwRI!!!

Venus session at GSA 2026 Annual Meeting
The session “Venus and Earth: Separated at Birth” has been proposed for the Geological Society of America Connects 2026 meeting. This session solicits abstracts on volcanism, tectonism, impact cratering, weathering, and surface-atmosphere interactions. It encompasses surface geology, interior evolution, and comparative planetary studies with observational, experimental, or theoretical approaches.
GSA is in Denver, Colorado on October 11-14, 2026. The timing and location of VEXAG 2026 will allow the Venus community to easily attend both meetings! We hope that VEXAG attendees will submit abstracts to GSA to ensure a well-attended and vibrant session! GSA has both full meeting and one-day registrations. The abstract deadline is August 6, 2026.

Public comment period on key changes in OMB’s proposed Federal Financial Assistance Rule
A proposed federal rule released last week could fundamentally change how scientific research is funded and conducted in the United States. The Office of Management and Budget (OMB) has proposed sweeping revisions to the regulations that govern all federal grants, cooperative agreements, and other forms of federal financial assistance. If finalized as written, this rule would give political appointees veto power over peer review, allow the government to cancel active grants mid-project with minimal justification, ban entire categories of science from federal funding, and restrict researchers' ability to publish their work and attend scientific conferences. A summary of the key changes and their implications can be found here:

The United States government will accept comments on the key changes proposed to the Federal Financial Assistance Rule until July 13, 2026. Comments must be submitted to regulations.gov, Docket OMB-2026-0034.

AGU is also accepting comments on the proposed changes through AGU’s Action Center.
