Hello Venusians!

There has been a lot of discussion lately as to how those of us interested in Venus can advocate to help keep Venus missions and science funded in the next (and all future) fiscal years.  As the 2026 federal budget continues to be reconciled, there is still an opportunity for all of us to make a difference.  Below we provide some suggestions as to how we can all try to help, if you are so inclined.

  1.  Find out how to contact your elected officials
  2.  Planetary Society Dashboard showing the economic impact of Venus mission cancellation
  3.  Template letter

If you wish to advocate for Venus science, please consider contacting both the DC and the local offices of your elected officials.  You can find out how to contact them at the link below.  Even if you are unable to call yourself, you can encourage friends and family to do so!  If you spend considerable time in a different state (e.g. own property, do regular field work, etc.) and thus spend significant funds in that state (e.g. pay taxes of any kind, etc.), you might also consider reaching out to the elected officials of that state as well (since your contribution to their economy would be damaged by this budget).

The President’s Budget Request calls for a 50% reduction in NASA science funding.  NASA’s science investments benefit every state and 77% (335) of all congressional districts. In FY 2024 alone, NASA science committed $8.1 billion to recipients around the country.  You can find out how this would affect your state at the Planetary Society dashboard at the link below. The dashboard shows how much NASA money is directed in each state, how much it generates for each state, and how many jobs it enables. It also shows how much money the PBR budget would cut from each state, how many jobs would be put at risk, and how much money the state will lose due to lost economic activity.  This is valuable information to have on hand when you contact your elected officials!

Attached is a draft letter that demonstrates the importance of Venus science and the selected Venus missions.  Please feel free to use this template as you decide what you would like to say to your elected officials. It includes science nuggets and historical information about Venus research and missions that might be of use to you. Although at this late date a phone call to your elected official has the most chance of contributing to the effort, adapting this letter to make it your own and mailing it to your elected officials would also be beneficial to the effort to save NASA science and Venus research!
