Hi Metal Shop members,
I wanted to check in about our next meeting, which is currently scheduled for Thursday January 19th at 6pm.

Charlie has informed me a conflict arose and he can't make that time this month, so I wanted to ask if people were able to meet on a different day, perhaps that same week.

Would Tuesday or Wednesday (17th or 18th) work for anyone?

For February we should be able to stick to the 3rd Thursday at 6 for the regular meeting time, this should just be a one-off change.

Let me know, thanks!
Alex

P.S. Happy new year!

I am fine with either Tuesday or Wednesday, I would likely be a few minutes late.

Hey all, sorry for not getting back to this sooner!
It sounds like Tues or Wed will work. How about we call it Wednesday 18th at 6pm?

Sorry for the poor scheduling communication - I just realized I double-booked myself for that Wednesday night. There is also a Soft Crafts Shop meeting at the same time.

Phil, Charlie, as the two that responded to the meeting invite, would you mind if we moved it till next Tuesday the 24th?

Alex, that’s actually a bit better for me, I’m on the tail end of having Covid.

Thanks,
Phil

I could probably make the 24th work,  my schedule is pretty fluid. I was planning to make it tomorrow night; can still if that's the move.

Hey guys, I just checked with Charlie on alternatives. Wednesday or Thursday evening would work better for him. There is a Wood Shop class on Wednesday night, so we should probably go for Thursday.

Would Thursday at 6pm work for you all?

Alright, sounds like Thursday 26th at 6pm will work for folks! Thanks, sorry to keep having us bounce around!

I think the main agenda item is talking about the Machine Shop plans and getting some of the details settled.

As a reminder, the Use of Space Form is an important aspect of approving the project with the Board. I started a draft of that here, along with a few other blank templates that are linked in there like a bill of materials and project timeline.

Other Machine Shop items: Charlie has started going through the tons of tool bits and items under the lathe, trying to sort out what is worth keeping and what we can sell, donate, or otherwise get rid of. If you want to help out get in touch, and at some point we'll need help selling these items on ebay or somewhere. It is very valuable stuff, but doesn't fit our equipment or what we generally need.

We're also working with a potential instructor for machine shop classes, Craig Merrow. There is a tentative date of March 4th for a Lathe class. We'll be collaborating on the syllabus for this to make sure we get everything covered.

Thanks, see you all next week!

Hey all,
Just a reminder about our meeting tonight at 6pm!

I will be at the shop, but Charlie will be online. I encourage anyone that can't make it in person to attend virtually.
For the virtual side, we'll use google meet via this link: https://meet.google.com/xiv-ycpn-qfw

Hope to talk to you folks later today!

Hi all,
Just wanted to follow up on some of the things we discussed!

Charlie, Phil, and I met and primarily discussed the Machine Shop buildout project. Largely we determined a few things that need to happen and in which order, and took on some action items to push things forward. I'll try to keep it brief, but here it goes:
  1. Layout plans - need to be finalized. Phil and Alex took some measurements and made markings loosely based on the proposed layout plan.
  2. Construction costs - once layout is done, Phil's father can help supply estimate of materials and proper dimensional drawing. Alex will look into estimates for doors based on previous door purchases.
  3. Electrical costs - Charlie will make a list of needs for power based on equipment and lighting, review it with electricians who are doing work for us soon.
  4. Submit Use of Space Form - with a plan and costs (and details on how it will be done, see also steps 5 and 6) and any additional supporting info, submit it to the board for approval
  5. Area prep - a number of things will need to move before the buildout can occur, but there are plans for the majority of them. Seacoast Rep is willing to move to a different spot (Alex will follow up), sandblasting cabinet can move into Metal Shop when the mill and lathe move out, Sheet Good Storage rack can be moved to the nearby corner when space becomes available.
  6. Actual buildout - we'll need many hands available to put up walls, move equipment, and whatever else comes up. We have much to do before we can get people to commit, but also we'd love to know who's ready to help if/when the time comes.

For the dimensions, attached is a screenshot of what we measured today. I used OnShape to draw it up since it's free and web-based, and you can actually see the drawing here (and make a copy to modify).

That's it I think! We welcome any feedback or additional support.

Next regularly scheduled meeting is the 3rd Thursday, so February 16th at 6pm.

Thanks,
Alex
