As promised, attached is the Capital Request for the replacement and installation of an entirely new dust collection system. It includes a summary of the problems we face as well as a detailed plan to address the problem, along with a detailed design and itemised lists of parts and materials needed, along with costs.

I'd appreciate any feedback.  You will notice that I referenced the data Michael collected as a key piece of compelling evidence supporting our urgent request; however, it is not included here as I don't have the data to share.  Once available, I can include what would promise to be an integral part in making our case.  Empirically, I think we can all agree that spending any time in Woodshop 1 represents a long-term health hazard.

The design we are including is the result of a comprehensive review of our current needs, along with a 3D rendering of the ductwork and placement by our consultant, who did the design for free.    He would also install the system for free, assuming there would be a couple of extra hands to assist in the process from our volunteer pool.  He is only asking for a one-night stay in a local hotel, which will not cost more than $200.

You will notice that it would include machines that are not currently being covered in the current system, as well as machines that are, but not adequately.  With this design, we would get coverage for the Sawstop, the Delta 20" bandsaw, and the sanding station, none of which are currently covered adequately.
This does not include the replacement of the Jet dust collection unit currently serving the jointer and planer.  That system works fairly well as long as the bag is emptied when full and both gates are not being used simultaneously.

There are two dust collection units recommended: Oneida and Laguna.  I would encourage you to read the details for each.  My recommendation is to go with the Laguna.  Its benefits include a self-cleaning Hepa filter, an easier bag-emptying process, and a much smaller footprint. The container size is comparable to what we are using now (39 gal.)

The advantage of the Oneida is that it has a cyclone system and can accommodate a 55-gallon drum.  It is recommended that you open no more than 3 gates at a time.  We are checking on the Laguna. The footprint is much larger than the Laguna

At first glance, the Onieda seems to be the cheaper option.  However, what you don't see are the hidden costs.  I have added the following accessories to the Oneida to make it usable:

  • angle bracket extension kit  (this is necessary to be able to put the drum on the dolly and wheel it out to empty it)
  • steel drum dolly (necessary to move the drum in and out)
  • drum line bag holder sleeves  (you need this so the bag doesn't get sucked up into the motor)
  • bags for the drum
  • Infrared dust sentry bin fill level indicator (this is a warning, like we have for the Je,t to let us know when the bag is full)
  • automated dust control switch (this shuts the system down until you empty the bag. Something we should have for the Jet)
  • shipping (included for both units and not insignificant)

I know some of you are going to question whether or not we need to spend this much money to correct the system and whether or not we could repurpose any of the current equipment.  My question is, what is the cost of not correcting the current hazardous situation?  There is nothing to say, we request what we can and implement a fundraising campaign to cover the rest.

Please get back to me by next Monday, as I would like to submit this ASAP.  Any comments are welcome.

Hi Elliot,
Thank you for putting this together, I read through it and think it gets the point across. I'll go ahead and share this with Sarah and talk about getting something in the capital budget.
Thank you!
Alex
