My story is about how Chris Clark, Assistant Director at the Kaneb Center for Teaching & Learning at the University of Notre Dame, has made a difference and how POD matters.
Chris is the wizard behind the screen who has built and supported the implementation of the POD Matters badges. He is also responsible for the collaboration and coordination of the initial POD conference badging team who offered badges at last year’s conference that were issued to both learners and presenters. You can learn more about the initiatives for both years here: https://learning.nd.edu/podbadgeinfo
I first met Chris at the POD Teaching with Technology (TwT) Special Interest Group (SIG) gatherings offered at the 2015 POD conference. He was very involved in the TwT SIG and he had a knack of encouraging people to connect. A document that was created to build a database of people and the areas they had experience and interest in. Soon after the conference, Chris reached out to me and a few others and he extended an invitation to submit a proposal for the following year to share info about our faculty development badging systems. Together Chris Clark & Alex Ambrose (Notre Dame), Gwynn Mettetal (IU South Bend), Dave Pedersen (Embry-Riddle AU), and myself, Roberta (Robin) Sullivan, (State University of New York at Buffalo), pulled together a successful conference session. In the process, we also came up with the idea to implement the conference digital badging system.
This year, with encouragement from the former team members, Chris pulled together a brand-new badging idea… implementing badges tied to the conference theme of “Why POD Matters.” I for one, am thankful to Chris for keeping the badging system alive. Although digital badges are not a mainstream tool, as of yet, within education, they do have the potential to be an important trend to motivate, acknowledge, and support learning in a variety of new ways.
Chris has impacted many POD members who have earned, or who have just become a little more aware of, the motivational aspects of digital badges for faculty and learners of all types. I’m happy to be able to earn another badge because of his efforts.
Thanks Chris!
Robin
