Title: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion in Simulation-Based Education: Experiences from Multiple Academic Health Centers
ABSTRACT
The integration of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion (DEI) into healthcare professional training is critical in order to ensure positive patient outcomes and help combat healthcare disparities, leading towards health equity. There is not currently a standard specific to DEI awareness in healthcare education and training One area of healthcare training is simulation-based education (SBE), which is training that is set up to be as close to a real environment as possible for healthcare professional training. There is little in the literature that addresses DEI within SBE, yet SBE is one area with the potential for making an impact in healthcare delivery. This qualitative multi-site case study explored SBE at academic health centers in the United States and the experiences of the administrators involved. The nine participants shared their commitment to patient-centered and family-centered care. There were three distinct pillars that formed the foundation of the integration of DEI into SBE: self-reflection and starting from within; deliberate integration of DEI into SBE; and the importance of community outreach and collaborations. Three recommendations are expanded on: the inclusion of subject matter experts (SMEs); community outreach and engagement; and the investment in SBE teams’ mental health and wellbeing. When healthcare professional simulation program administrations and teams are unsure where to begin with the integration of DEI into SBE they can use The Self-Assessment Values & Engagement (SAVE) Tool, which was created out of this research.
