Course Description:

Explore professional skills and knowledge for careers in academic advising, career counseling, and life mentoring/coaching in higher education and human resources organizations including Graduate Certification and Master's Degree options. (Concurrently, register for optional ELP 509, Advising Practicum, for hands-on experience.)  The purpose of this course is to provide an overview of the theoretical research, conceptual frameworks, and professional knowledge and skills associated with effective academic advising and career counseling.  Whether you are new to the field or already have direct experience in these realms, the course is intended to provide you with an understanding of contemporary approaches and strategies for guiding students toward their academic and professional goals. Given the interactive nature of the PACE program, students will also gain insights from each other as we share accounts of receiving and providing effective academic and career advising. In sum, this class will be an informative and provocative foundation for those interested in and pursuing their own careers in academic advising and career counseling including professional roles in life skills coaching and mentoring.

Course counts as part of the PACE Master's Degree. Specializations and Graduate Certificates include: Student Services Leadership; Teaching Diverse Adult Learners; Enacting Change through Service-Learning and Community Engagement; Training and Development. https://www.pdx.edu/academics/programs/graduate/postsecondary-adult-and-continuing-education-pace
