Title: Exploring the Experiences of White Passing and White-Assumed Latine College Students

ABSTRACT

While Latine college enrollment has increased, compared to the nationwide decline in enrollment, retention and graduation rates for this demographic have not paralleled those of their white peers. Numerous well-researched barriers affect their academic journey, but the influence of colorism, especially among lighter-skinned or white passing Latine students, remains under-researched. In response, this study delves into the experiences of these students at an emerging HSI in the Pacific Northwest. While existing research predominantly centers on the Afro-Latine experience and the associated trauma from colorism, this study begins to explore the experiences of a missing voice in the literature on Latine students - those who are white passing or white-assumed. This study employs a qualitative, case study approach utilizing Testimonio and Counterstory to push back on the dominant narrative on Latine students, which often overlooks the nuances of identity and diversity within the Latine community. By shedding light on this perspective, the study aims to provide a more comprehensive understanding of colorism's effects on college campuses and suggests ways to support the broader Latine community.
