Join us at Greene Kitchen Farm in Columbia County for a hands-on tree-grafting workshop, focused on approachable, low-cost methods. You’ll go home with a tree you grafted yourself!
You don’t need a degree in horticulture or a professional nursery background to graft fruit and nut trees–just a desire to learn! Join three seasoned grafters to learn simple techniques you can apply right away.
We’ll use apple trees to guide you through the grafting process, one of the easiest species to start with. Together, the speakers will cover key topics such as selecting the right rootstock and scionwood for your needs, as well as choosing from a variety of grafting techniques. You’ll leave with a strong foundation in grafting principles and the skills to continue at home.
Not only will you get hands-on practice with all materials provided, but you’ll also be able to take home the grafted apple tree you worked on during the workshop. If you have scionwood or other materials you’d like to trade or share, feel free to bring them along to swap with others!
Come for an afternoon of learning, sharing, and connecting with fellow tree enthusiasts. Whether you’re just getting started or looking to expand your skills, this workshop is designed to empower you to grow your own fruit and nut trees.
All necessary supplies will be provided. If you have pruners, utility knives, gloves, etc., please bring them along, but we will have extras for those without. Since we are working closely with knives and pruners, every participant will need to sign a waiver.
Lunch will be provided.
About the speakers:
Russ Wilson is the owner of Wilson Land & Cattle Co., where he has integrated a silvopasture system by planting thousands of trees, including hundreds of self-grafted apple varieties that create a unique orchard focused on resilience and productivity. With a low-input approach to farming and livestock, Russ works to advance sustainable agriculture by integrating trees into grazing systems to enhance the health and productivity of his land.
Joshua Greene, director of education at Trees For Graziers, runs Greene Kitchen Farm with his wife Nichole & children where they custom graze certified organic dairy heifers and raise grass-fed beef & pastured poultry for direct market and ‘good eating’. Joshua and his family have worked to build a flexible, low-input grazing system on average Pennsylvania hillside soils. In place of the dying ash trees, they have planted over 2000 trees on the farm to provide shade for livestock. In 2023 & 2024, Joshua was mentored by Russ through PAGLC’s mentorship program.
