in Loysville, PA. Farmers
will detail the practices and systems they have used to develop and maintain soil health on their 255 acre diversified certified organic vegetable farm in the hills of central Pennsylvania.
Spiral Path Farm is located in scenic western Perry County, between the Tuscarora and Blue Mountain ranges. Near the town of Loysville, Spiral Path Farm has been home to Mike and Terra Brownback since 1978 and has been certified organic since 1994. Both sons, Will and Lucas, have joined the farm business as 2nd generation farmers. Spiral Path Farm raises a wide variety of certified organic vegetables, herbs and annual fruits. They are committed to farming practices, which protect and nurture the soil, while providing healthy, farm-fresh produce.
The day’s activities will include a history of Spiral Path’s development, focusing on the evolution in their thinking and approaches to soil health through nearly 40 years of production. There will also be in-the-field discussions of compost and vermicompost production, transplant and greenhouse production, cover cropping, and detailed fertility and pest control tips for multiple vegetable crops. Participants will also draw insights from PASA’s soil health benchmark study: an ambitious new project to set and exceed soil health goals on PASA farms through farmer-to-farmer research and education.
This day is suitable for anyone interested in understanding more about the many facets of managing a farm for soil health. The day will include formal and in-the-field presentation, a question and answer session, and opportunities to meet and interact with sponsoring businesses and organizations. Lunch is included with the registration fee.
