Every five years or so, Congress (theoretically) passes a Farm Bill,
but the Farm Bill is not the only way to influence agriculture policy. Through agriculture appropriations (i.e. how the government spends money), Congress allocates billions of dollars for USDA and FDA programs each year, including many crucial sustainable agriculture programs. It may not be as glamorous as the farm bill, but appropriations advocacy is super important for keeping support flowing to sustainable farmers.
The FY27 appropriations cycle has begun! The key action opportunity throughout March and into April is submitting programmatic funding requests to Members of Congress. The National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition (NSAC) submits requests to all members of the House and Senate Agriculture Appropriations Subcommittees. To demonstrate wide support for these funding asks, NSAC is organizing a few sign-on letters for specific programs:
If you're a farmer, organization, or business who cares about these funding asks, you can sign-on, too!
