Hi Sam,

thanks.

Don't know how other companies handle job applications, but I suspect there will be a job description included in the call for applicants and not somewhere hidden on different resources on the web site. </sarcasm>. For me such points go without saying. Don't get why it doesn't for OWASP?

This was just different as we discussed in BCN.

And, oops, yesterday I got an email again.

Hi Dirk,

Some of it is explained by Andrew van der Stock in this video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L7dkvE5Rza8

Also please see the Board Members Commitment Agreement here:

Also watch this video from Sherif's "OWASP Board Elections - Learn what it's like to be on the OWASP Board": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KEoVYUjht6E

and there is a 'Non-profit for Dummies' book :)  here: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1119835720

Hope this helps!

Best regards,

Hi,

I am missing the job description as discussed in Barcelona and/or as a TL;DR what the global board members are doing all the time.

Last but not least an applicant should make an informed decision 😉

Cheers & thanks, Dirk

Dear Member,

Each August, the OWASP community begins selecting its Global Board of Directors for the next year. Board Directors serve for multiple years and are elected by our members. In this election, four Board seats will be up for grabs.

Running for the Board:
  • To be eligible to stand for the OWASP Board, you must be a continuous paid individual member as of September 30, 2024.
  • If you meet this requirement and want to run, you need to nominate yourself as a candidate.

Participating in the Election:
  • Even if you’re not running for the Board, you can still get involved by contributing to the election process.
  • One way to do this is by participating in creating or reviewing interview questions for the candidates.

If you want to learn more about the election and see the timeline, please visit the Election Policy page.

Thank you

The best way to know what the Board does is to watch the recordings of the board meetings.

But, if it helps, below is a job description, written by Google Gemini.

- Bil

Summary

The Board of Directors for the OWASP Foundation is a team of elected, unpaid volunteers responsible for the strategic direction, financial health, and overall governance of the organization. Directors serve a two-year term, working collaboratively to uphold the foundation's mission and core values. This is a vital leadership role that requires strong commitment and a deep understanding of the OWASP community.

Responsibilities

  • Strategic Leadership: Set the Foundation's strategic direction, vision, and mission. Work with staff and the community to establish goals and priorities.

  • Fiduciary and Financial Oversight: Oversee the Foundation's financial health, including budget approval and monitoring, and ensure sound, ethical, and legal governance.

  • Fundraising: Promote the Foundation and actively engage in fundraising by introducing new corporate members, sponsors, and donations.

  • Governance and Policy: Adopt sound governance and financial policies. The Board's primary responsibility is to formulate and evaluate policy and strategy, with day-to-day operations delegated to the professional staff.

  • Community Engagement: Serve as a model of leadership and civility, treating all community members and staff with respect. Participate in public board meetings and represent the Foundation.

  • Compliance: Adhere to all applicable laws, the OWASP Code of Conduct, and all Foundation policies.

Qualifications & Requirements

  • OWASP Membership: Must be an OWASP individual member in good standing for at least twelve continuous months prior to the election deadline.

  • Commitment: The role is for a two-year term. Directors must attend at least 75% of general Board meetings annually, with a preference for attending at least two in-person meetings, typically held at Global AppSec events.

  • Conduct: Must be a person of honesty and integrity who is willing to treat others with respect and maintain appropriate confidentiality.

  • Technical Aptitude: A strong personal initiative and technical aptitude are expected.

  • Onboarding: If elected, successful candidates must complete all necessary onboarding, including signing the Board of Directors Commitment Agreement, and agreeing to the Board Code of Conduct.

Application Process Board Directors are elected by the OWASP membership. Candidates must maintain good standing as an OWASP Voting Member throughout the election process and their term. The election process includes submitting a bio and a statement of interest and may involve a video Q&A with the community. Specific dates and deadlines for nominations and voting are published on the OWASP website.

Hi all,

thanks, Bill. To clarify: the question was not for myself — I can help myself if I would run.

TL;DR: It’s just a process which needs to be improved.

Details: As said it’s we a) discussed it at the Chapters Leaders Meeting in Barcelona b) it might help to shed some light what people do in the board and avoid person running for the board just because it’s just nice to have this position on the resume c) as a security community we like people to make informed decisions and thus it’s needed to pass information instead of having a candidate which gets elected and maybe is disappointed because it’s not what s/he expected. d) as said to me it’s just essential not getting a mail "hey, you want to apply for a job?“ But also "this is what your job looks like“.

Cheers, Dirk
