Looks great! Might I suggest some adjustment around how the ages are described and defined? The email and draft policy variously describe the U25 threshold as "under 25", "under the age of 24", and "24 and under". For consistency with how other OUSA age ranges are defined (if I understand those correctly, and the relevant max age here is 24 not 25), I'd suggest:
  • Call it U24 instead of U25 - so that the number is always inclusive - e.g. to parallel "F−18" which I think is inclusive of 18-year-olds
  • Use the phrase "24 and under" - which I think leaves less ambiguity than "under 25"
Though I surely could have misunderstood something about how the competition classes and/or policy are intended to work.
Thanks!
Pepe

For the last several weeks the BOD has been formulating a Membership
Policy. Surprisingly we don't have a formal policy and have been acting on
tradition. We have drafted this policy and are open to your opinions on
this policy draft before we finalize and approve a policy.

Here are the relevant points:

- "Student" membership name has been changed to "U25" since it doesn't
matter if you are enrolled in school only if you are under age 25 on Dec 31
of the current year.
- For joining or renewing Junior and U25 memberships, your age is
considered your age on Dec 31 of the current year. (The same as your
competition class.)
- Family Lifetime memberships are being discontinued.
- Existing Family Lifetime are grandfathered and rules for
handling them have been defined.
- Family Memberships are defined
- Lifetime (individual) memberships will include dependents under 25.
- Fees are not changing in this policy.
- Club OUSA membership procedures are not changing.
- There is a table showing the benefits by membership type.

Here is the policy draft for your review.

Stephen, I understand what you're getting at, but U24 implies 23 and under. Maybe a different letter in front, like 'P' for people, would be like F-18, so it would be called P-24.  What do you think?

I agree with Ruth to not use U, it can only lead to confusion because of its use in soccer and other team sports in schools, where U18 means under 18, and the date of switch is sometimes in September.

I think Y25 as in youth 25 and under, with 25 being the age on Dec. 31 would align far better with the age for WUOC athletes as well as the target age for athletes supported by Youth Development, and I think that is also the age for the IOF Young Leader Academy.

U25 does mean age 24 or younger at the end of the calendar year, according to Wikipedia. I would be fine keeping it that way, but had to look it up to be certain.

If you want to align more with competitor classes, instead of P-24 as an alternative, how about YA-24 or O-24 (young adult or orienteer aged 24 and younger) for this definition?

Oh yeah, good points, I concur with all the subsequent suggestions! As I understand it, that pretty much any letter is better than "U", if indeed we standardize on all OUSA age codes as being inclusive of the named age.

Sounds like there's a distinct, but related, question of whether the membership policy should or should not include 25-year olds. (Wouldn't want that more substantive point to get lost in the discussion of abbreviation optimization.)
