The National Team Executive Steering Committee is pleased to announce that the Team Trials for 2025 will be held together at BAOC’s event next Feb 28 - Mar 2. These trials will be used to select teams to compete at the Junior World Orienteering Championships 2025, to be held in Trentino, Italy June 26-July 4, and the World Orienteering Championships 2025, to be held in Kuopio, Finland, July 7-12.

The schedule currently includes a middle distance on Saturday and a long distance on Sunday, both at Calero County Park and both part of the WOC and JWOC trials. In addition, there will be a sprint race on a Friday at a location TBD, to be used only for the JWOC trials.

Please see the full announcement for more information and for a link to the JWOC selection criteria. WOC selection criteria will be released in early December.

Please share this information with your clubs, either with this email or via the Facebook or Instagram.

Registration now open on EventReg, or see Event page

Please be reminded that if you intend to petition rather than attend the Team Trials (JWOC or WOC), you still need to register as Non-Compete (at no cost) so as to fill in the declaration as candidate and information needed to verify eligibility. See National Team page for the published 2025 Selection Criteria for WOC and JWOC.

I don’t have any direct connection to candidates for the national teams, but I am concerned about the timing of the Trials.

It puts those in the north at a disadvantage - it is the middle of Winter for them, when orienteering is hardly available in their home territory.

I am not one to bet money on things, but if I were I would put a lot of money on the results of the US team trials being the same whether they are held in March or in May.

I agree with Cristina about the timing of the trials, it should not matter that much. It would have been nice if the trials had been announced much earlier than it was, for people to have more time to prepare for travelling, and any discussions about the time and location of the trials had happened before the final announcement.

For anyone concerned about Team Trials/National Team issues, I and all of the ESC always welcome your input. We are, as most OUSA workers, volunteers and we do the best we can, balancing our roles with our own training/racing, work, and family issues. I will say that it can be very difficult to schedule Team Trials (unless we continually go back to Flying Pig and/or West Point). So, when we have a willing club with an already-scheduled event, we take it. It's not always ideal timing or location, and this year there was a conflict with an overseas event several of our top men are attending. We realize that it's not perfect, but most of the athletes are rolling with it. As you can see, the Team Trials date/location was announced 3 months in advance, which is minimal but adequate.

I agree with Cristina that our top athletes will be top regardless of the timing. (See, for example, the AttackPoint training logs of Greg Ahlswede, Danny Riley, and AJ Riley, who are all living in the Syracuse area, and are running in the snow and the dark and doing great. It can be done.)

We are always looking for people to join the Executive Steering Committee or one of the selection committees. I encourage anyone who has an interest in the National Team to consider a position for next year (we're set for 2025).

Those who really want to make the team will find a way; others might make excuses.

The top male orienteers are in the Scranton PA area (I think Peggy mistyped...Syracuse has a bit more snow, I guess). There's plenty of snow and short days there too, but they're motivating each other to keep training.

Thanks Janet!
