to OpenWDL Community

Hi everyone, on behalf of the OpenWDL steering committee, I'm excited to announce that we're going to hold a community hackathon on February 18-19, hosted by the Broad Institute. The event will focus on setting up a testing framework and writing a suite of WDLs to exercise all the features of the WDL 1.0 specification.

Event details

Our primary goal is to provide a testing and compliance resource for engine implementers to ensure that all implementations (Cromwell, miniWDL etc) produce the same behavior from the same WDL code. This will promote portability of workflows across platforms, which is a key factor for the reproducibility of analyses encoded in WDL.

We propose a collaborative format (not competitive) consisting of three tracks with the following objectives:

  1. Define the best practices for writing and running WDL tests

  2. Create or compile a suite of WDL tests against the Version 1.0 Spec

  3. Discuss options for setting up an integration test suite for the community and engines

This event is geared toward people with intermediate to advanced WDL experience and will involve coding.

For those with beginner-level or no prior experience of WDL, we will plan a follow-up event that will be dedicated to using the test suite as basis for improved documentation, which will provide ample opportunity for beginners to contribute and learn about WDL at the same time.

Location, hours and other relevant logistics

The primary location will be the Broad Institute offices at 105 Broadway Avenue in Cambridge, MA, USA. Remote participants are welcome to join over video conferencing (details to follow).

The primary hours will be from 9 AM to 5 PM on Tuesday 2/18 and Wednesday 2/19. We are currently looking into the feasibility of accommodating remote participants from distant timezones by organizing an optional overnight session.

Lunch will be provided by the Broad Institute on both days. There will be an optional social outing on the evening of Tuesday 2/18 (currently self-paid; looking for sponsors).

Travel and accommodation assistance are not available for this event.

Registration

To sign up, please fill out this form by Friday 2/14. You'll have the opportunity to sign up for either one or both days and to specify whether you plan to attend in person or remotely.

If you have any questions, please email con...@openwdl.org.

I hope to see many of you there, in person or over the video call!
