Announcing the OpenSSL Library 4.1 Installer for Windows

The OpenSSL Library installer for Microsoft Windows is now available. This is the first officially produced binary distribution of the OpenSSL Library.

Until now, the OpenSSL Library has been distributed in source form only. Windows users have had to build the library themselves or rely on binary packages produced by third parties. The new installer provides a distribution channel directly from us: with binaries built, packaged and signed by the OpenSSL Corporation.

The installer binaries for OpenSSL Library 4.1 are available at:
https://github.com/openssl/installer/releases

The installer provides:

  • the OpenSSL Library DLLs,

  • the openssl.exe command-line application,

  • two flavours, VS and hybridCRT. VS bundles the Visual C++ redistributable; hybridCRT has no runtime dependency,

  • an optional FIPS provider. All variants include the 4.1.0 provider; the VS variants for x64 and x86 additionally offer the FIPS-validated 3.1.2 module. On ARM64 the installer is hybridCRT only, so the 4.1.0 provider is the only FIPS option there,

  • the development kit for building applications against the OpenSSL Library.

The installer, the application, and all installed DLLs are digitally signed with the OpenSSL Corporation key, so the authenticity and integrity of every component can be verified through the standard Windows code-signing mechanisms. Windows shows the publisher as OpenSSL Software Services Czech, s.r.o., the OpenSSL Corporation’s company in Brno that produces the installer.

The installer is available for the following platforms, as either an executable (.exe) or a Microsoft rInstaller (.msi) package:

  • Windows x64 (HybridCRT or Visual Studio runtime)

  • Windows x86, 32-bit (HybridCRT or Visual Studio runtime)

  • Windows ARM64 (HybridCRT runtime)

The minimum supported platforms are Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 for x64 and x86, and Windows 10 1507 (RTM) for ARM64.

Installers will accompany future releases of the OpenSSL Library. Problems with the installer itself go to the issue tracker at https://github.com/openssl/installer/issues; problems with the Library go where they always have.
