Hi,

I am new to OpenMRS, and recently I did fair amount of online research about OpeMRS. My expertise is in IT and management.
I am based out of Kochi, India and am looking forward to propose OpenMRS as an affordable solution to digitize health centers around my area.
They are still using paper based records while some of them use IT solutions for billing.

Are there any vendors in South India(Kerala, TamilNadu, Karnataka, AP) offering professional Open MRS implementation services?
If then, please share their details. I would like to get more details about the implementations costs.

Also, please share information on hospitals in South India who is already using OpenMRS?
Unfortunately I could not get find any on OpenMRS Atlas. I would like to visit the facilities and study how they are using OpenMRS.

Thanks,
Arun Paul

Hi Arun,

I have been a long term contributor in the OpenMRS community. I am based out of Mumbai, but have done many OpenMRS implementations in India.
I am currently involved in personal capacity, mainly consulting other organizations for OpenMRS implementations.
Previously, I've been part of other organizations that have implemented OpenMRS in northern and eastern India.
I've also consulted for a large ISV, who use a heavily modified OpenMRS core inside their fully integrated hospital system
I've done a couple of old OpenMRS implementations in Mumbai that are still running.
These are very basic and simply digitization of paper records, once patient is discharged from nursing home, for their profitability calculations.

OpenMRS is quite flexible and implementations are quite varied in their use depending on the type of facility and the goals that they plan to achieve from a medical records system.
Thoughtworks is implementing an OpenMRS-based hospital system at JSS in rural Bilaspur, Chhattisgarh. They are based out of Bangalore.
There are quite a few of them on the list. If no one responds, then feel free to write to me off-list and I'll make the connection.

Hi Paul,

I work with http://www.thoughtworks.com, Bangalore. We have been working towards building an open source hospital management system, Bahmni. Bahmni is an OpenMRS implementation, also a "tapestry" of open source products like OpenERP(billing) and OpenElis(lab). You can find more details here http://www.bahmni.org/ and the code here https://github.com/Bhamni. Bahmni's registration, billing and lab modules have been successfully deployed and used at http://www.jssbilaspur.org/about/

Please let us know if you need further details.

Dear Shruthi,

Brilliant idea! Did you use an enterprise service bus to link them together?‎ What was your integration strategy?

We tried this in one of our smaller family-owned hospitals in the Philippines but hit a bump with human capacity. The initial developer/implementer was bilingual (Java and Python) but when he left (as is common for skills like that), the replacement could only support one.

Not that there was a need for source code level interventions. But the point-to-point integration (created by the bilingual) quickly became difficult to support by the new hire.

Maybe an ESB would make for easier integration? Or would it add yet another software to the soup?

Alvin,

It uses Atom Feed Integration to interchange data between OpenMRS, OpenELIS and OpenERP.

You can see the presentation of its architecture here:

Hi Saptarshi,

Thanks for sharing the information.

I am yet to recieve any information from the group on (1) List of OpenMRS implementors based in South India and (2) List of South Indian Hospitals that are using OpenMRS.
If possible , please help me with this.

As I said in my previous mail, I would like to know how much is the OpenMRS consultancy cost for a rural hospital that typically has about 10 doctors.  I have some rough idea about the hardware and networking costs.

Apart from this I would also like to know about the ongoing support costs.
Last week I spoke to an hospital administrator (paper based hospital) who raised concerns about availability of professional support for OpenMRS.
If anything happens to the application, the daily operations would come to a standstill until professional help arrives. I am curious to know how the support function is being handled in the existing OpenMRS installations cost effectively.  How much would the OpenMRS Application Support(excluding hardware and network support) would cost a hospital.

If you can share information on the 2 lists I mentioned above and the associated costs, that would be really helpful.

Thanks,
Arun Paul.

Hi Shruthi,

Thanks for sharing information on Bahmni. I went through the website and this sounds like a great initiative !
While I dig deeper, may I ask:
- What's Thoughtworks' commitment to continue this initiative for say next couple of years?
- Do you partner with any vendors  to provide implementation, consultancy and regular support services to the hospitals?
- If not, is there any support mechanism for the hospitals looking forward to have Bahmni implemented?

Thanks,
Arun Paul
