Hello everyone.

I was trying out the jasper reports module today, and tried uploading a basic report only to get this error immediately after uploading the zip file:

Any ideas on why this would happen?
Thanks!

P.S. Does anyone recommend any particular reporting solution for production use over the other?

Apologies, I attached the wrong screenshot.

Dear OKB,

It looks like you might have forgotten to specify the report file.  The “Top level report file name” needs to contain the name of the report that you zipped and uploaded.  See more details at…

https://wiki.openmrs.org/display/docs/Jasper+Report+Module

For your second error, I would verify you are using the same version editor as the Jasper module you’re using.  I remember one time I had to go in and manually and clean-up some of the report “code”, deleting things that it gave errors on.  That was many years ago.

I have used all of the different reporting technologies with OpenMRS.  They all have their place.  The simplicity of Jasper makes it highly desirable.  Also, seeing as the Cashier module uses Jasper, I have taken a little look recently.  For some years Jasper Report module didn’t work, so I migrated reports to BIRT.  The power (and integration) of BIRT makes it a great tool, but the report design isn’t as simple as Jasper.  My favorite is the Reporting Framework, which is ideally suited to aggregate reports (and simple datasets).  It’s super-powerful with the ability to output things into Excel files or email; using a template.

Thanks,

James

Hey James,
You were right on the first error, I'll try editing the second one to see if that fixes it.

I tried using the reporting module but found its design limiting and unintuitive despite its very powerful feature-set.
To boot, the guide appears (in some places) pretty outdated, and is written from the perspective of someone who already knows the reporting module in and out.

I'll do my best to edit the wiki as I go so others can benefit from my pain/experience.

James,
On further experimentation, I reverted to the iReport application instead of JasperSoft studio, and I was able to upload a report, without any errors.

I just have to figure out how to get the proper data model into iReport from OpenMRS now.

Ope,

Greetings, my team (OpenHMIS) has taken over development of the Jasper Reports module as the original developer, Simon Kelly, has seemingly left the community. When we mavenized the module and updated it to work with OpenMRS 1.9.x the current Jasper designer was iReport 4.8, or something like that, and so it was designed to work with the jrxml files produced by iReport. I have noticed that JasperSoft Studio was released but didn't see much of a reason to update the dependencies to what I assume is a new Jasper version; that said, I was unaware the reports created by JasperSoft Studio don't work with the current Jasper module release.

I guess that we can look into updating the Jasper dependency to whatever the current version is and hope that there are not too many (or, well, any) breaking changes, but that is pretty low on our priority list right now.

Thanks so much for your response Wes!

JasperSoft Studio appears to be a much better interface for report design than iReport, so I hope you do update it soon.

If I can lend a hand testing, please let me know!
