Hello,

I am implementing OpenMRS for an NGO whose patient records system up until now consisted of Excel spreadsheets. I am now setting out to migrate all the old Excel data into the OpenMRS implementation I've set up.  I have read through https://wiki.openmrs.org/display/docs/Migrating+Data+to+OpenMRS and https://wiki.openmrs.org/display/docs/Data+Migration but was hoping to get some additional advice. Should I directly import the Excel data into the appropriate OpenMRS mysql database tables with a script, or should I use the OpenMRS API? Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks!!!

Allie

Hi Allie,
I am not much of an expert in data migration but I am sure it would be a lot easier if you could come up with a script than using OpenMRS API.

Thanks, Mhawila. I decided to create a script for the data migration, and it's been successful so far.

Using openmrs API has many advantages includimg patient validation and creation of compulsory identifiers like openmrs id. I would vote for using the API and take full advantages it can offer.
