Hi all,

We are about to embark on implementing OpenMRS as the electronic medical record system for an herbal medicine clinic here in Ghana. We see 100 patients per day and currently have about 40,000 paper records on file. We have a records department, 3 patient consulting rooms, and a clinical lab. OpenMRS seems like it will work well.

Any and all advice are welcomed as we are just about to begin! What are some things you wish you knew when beginning to implement?

Thanks!!

Alex

Hi Alex. Have you taken a look at the OpenMRS Implementers Guide? [0]
It's a good place to start to gather your thoughts and develop your
implementation plan. You'll also find several people here on this list
willing to provide advice based on their own experiences.

Hi Alex,

Our experience from the Philippines:

- The implementation should follow standard project management principles and techniques. This means looking for a top-level project sponsor, consulting stakeholders, project charter, etc. This is not different from any other project. The only difference is that OpenMRS is an effective platform to start this project and will allow you to achieve quick wins early.

- I would try to understand the Ghana health insurance claim and prepare your OpenMRS to be compliant with that. This creates a good business case when you defend the cost of OpenMRS implementation because the system brings in revenue for the clinic. If you can show that going for OpenMRS can increase cash flow, you will get approval fast. Of course there are other benefits but the one on revenue is easiest for leaders to understand.

Good luck!

Alvin

Thanks Alvin and Michael-

I am reading the guide and its proving quite useful! Alvin, since our clinic is herbal we unfortunately can't use revenue from insurance. But from the project management side of things I think we are ready to go.

One more question if you have time. How do I export data from the system in to, lets say, an excel spreadsheet? I'm playing around with standalone now.

Thank you!!

Hi Alex,

You could try installing the Reporting Compatibility module for exporting data. That has a Data Export feature that will let you create customised data exports.

Ali-

Isn't that already installed automatically in version 1.9.3? Maybe I just need to figure out how to use the customized data export.

I forget whether it's part of the stand alone or not (you could check the Manage Modules page to be sure). But once it's installed you should see a "Manage Data Exports" link on the Administration page under Reports.
